all dance music is electronic dance music anyway.

unless it's adm (acoustic dance music?) and played on bongos, etc.

dunno why people can't just call it dance music, or electro, or techno, etc. etc.

the names are already there and have been for nearly 30 years.

fuckin journalists and idiot youvs.

really, how's that? what about funk, jive, swing, jazz, balet, foxtrot, samba, rumba, waltz, and etc?

Electronic music is music made with electronic instruments (be it techno, dubstep, house, hiphop or whatever). It's both music you can dance to, and music you can listen.

You can either have acoustic music, electro/acoustic or electronic music if you're already set out to generalize.

At least that's how it works for me.

I understood it that the proliferation of the term 'EDM' was due to the fact that were American event organisers to use the term 'Rave' when applying for liscencing, they would be refused because of the association to drug culture.

As a result the events were promoted as such. 'EDM' is 'Rave' rebranded for the American dance renaissance.

It's a different mindset. The kids that are buying tickets are going for the party. The artists serve this party and try to help create it (consciously or no). I think that's great if that's what you're into. The emotional connection - the reverence - is for the party and not the music. The music is temporary, and will change with the mood of the partygoers. I can see how that rubs music lovers the wrong way. In the long run I don't think it affects real intellectual music lovers THAT much because they're a different market.

I myself hate parties, though I sometimes listen to EDM alone, in my bedroom. Take that, subspace.

yeah i hate a lot of that stuff, but ill still get the fuck down like nobody's business whenever Ghosts n' Stuff plays.

Seriously, how can anyone hate that track?

I really like his view of EDM being completely disconnected from electronic music. I think it's a great point. Most of the artists who come out of that scene don't really seem to care about music. They don't know about any of the history of it, and don't even have the slightest idea or interest in what other types of electronic music might be out there. They're just doing it because it's popular, and they'll probably give it up as soon as the fad drops off. If all the influence comes from a handful of artists who are already disconnected, why should anyone consider EDM related to electronic music? Or even more absurdly, competition... it's not as if bros, pill poppers & white trash are ever going to care about composition, rhythm, emotion, atmosphere, etc. All they're in it for is the rush

edit:

plus, I mean, this should be pretty obvious anyway. you can say the same about any pop

music = art

anything made with the express purpose of getting money =/= art

pop =/= music

Not true.Every genre of music as its genius,true artists that love their art and dance music is no exception.Sure there is sell out everywhere but only a few EDM artist are rich,the majority of the producers are not ,there is a bunch of great underground artists and they do what they do because they love it and not for the money.And to say that because its dance music it dont require talent and musical skills is a very ignorant thing to say.

I mean , if you explore and dig deeper into dance music you find absolutly mind blowing music made with great love and skill .And i dont do drugs and dont even go to clubs,i just listen to it because some of it,A LOT OF IT is fucking awesome music ,with great atmospheres ,composition,rhythm and emotion.Dont be close minded and let your prejudices about dance music being shit and only for drugged people blind you.

Derrick May officially loses all legitimacy with his comments in that interview, with this picture.

It's a nice photo, I think Pete Tong looks like he's having a lovely time.
