So,

has anything been made here, or do you lot just talk about it?

I was part of a concept live improv electronic trio that had various grooveboxes, kaoss pads, Live ect all midi synced. It got understandably messy at times but was a lot of fun.

I don't know if any of you folks have ever heard of FAT32, but they're basically live IDM by way of Lightning Bolt/Hella.

Their album is on Spotify, it's pretty good.

I worked for a guy once that had a full midi kit and a rack synth. It sounded a lot like Autechre, so I asked him if he was a fan, but he had no idea who they were.

There are some pretty good results with midi kits, as long as you pick synthesized noises instead of traditional ones.

Here's something I did Wednesday afternoon, on a little Tascam Portastudio, just trying to see what the workflow and vibe of my pending project will be like. I laid down the drums at the tail end of a 5-hour session (which was at the tail end of a grueling day) so be easy on me.

So the bassline was from an upright bass solo off some 60's jazz vinyl, chopped into individual notes and then arranged into what you hear. Done on the Dr. Sample (SP-303). I've decided I want to sequence stuff on the SP-303 (e.g. basslines and random musique concrete bits) and then play drums to the sequence, and then perform every else to the drums. I love sampling and I always look for ways to integrate it into whatever I'm doing.

The lead is the SH-101 (obv) with a healthy of reverb.

I love the pad sound. I'm not telling what synth it is. :)

Anyway, obviously this is a rough sketch but I'm curious what you guys think about the vibe and conceptual elements.

Cheers.

This is really cool imo. I like the vibe a lot. I don't often go in for jazzy stuff but this has a special triphoppy vibe that I dig. It feels more live and alive than I often give electronic music credit for.

Forge on brave soldier!

Thanks for the words, ch'all.

I can't wait to lay down some squelchy acid basslines and then play all my favorite Elvin Jones licks over them. :w00t:

definitely enjoyed this. all the elements work together well for me. yeah, those pads sound very trippy and cool. the drum part is good, but hella tinny on this recording. if you can get the final recordings sounding a bit more hi-fi then you'll be onto a real winner!

The end result will sound nothing like this.

The Portastudio is 3.75 ips (I think).

The 388 is 15 ips.

As for the mix: I didn't obsess over it as it's just a rough sketch.

edit: when I say "the end result will sound nothing like this" I mean fidelity-wise

if i had the skill ... i'd make a record out of just live drums, processed and bass.

layering live drums just playing each sound at a time instead of playing it as a drum kit as such. so much scope ... go where your imagination takes you

great stuff. Actually reminds me a lot of the battles mixture of electronic/live. But with way more of a groove.

(I just listened back and those drums are gross. I wish I had recorded the drums fresh the next day instead.

I stand by the harmonic and melodic content, though.)

I really like the idea you have for this project. I don´t get why there were so many telling you it was a bad idea and not to do it. If you get an idea and you´re ambitious about it, DO IT! It´s not as if it would necessarilly even be classed as "IDM" in the end, this is obviously just a way of getting the inspiration to do something. Anyway, good for you! haha

In regards to the track recently posted:

Harmonic and melodic content is lovely, and I have no particular issues with the percussion, might be nice to switch ´em up a bit somewhere, maybe make them more cymbley or tom-y or whatever you want in there.

I do like that weird-as-hell bassline you start using at 0:17, but it does end up getting a bit repetetive. I´d maybe try mixing up the order of those notes, fucking with them a little bit ;)

Love that synth that plays the sustained chords. Lovely choice of chords too!

Good luck! Can´t wait to hear more!
