Dear limpy, please tell us why you like the piano track again.

This thread needs to be put back on track again, and we musn't have papa J. delete some of our precious exchanges now would we? I'd be terribly disappointed if he would.

Here, I'll start: i sure liked those lush doppler effects.

You know its not so much that you disagree or dislike the piece. It is the cynical and hateful comments that are bothersome.

To paraphrase:

"RDJ can't make good music anymore so he compensates by doing pretentious and grandiose performances"

"he wont' release music because he knows it's all shit"

Those types of comments are arguably flame baiting which by the way is against the rules.

But the thing is you can make a well thought out statement about why you are less than impressed without being a douche-bag So, why not just do that? Even though this is the internet we can at least attempt to have a little bit of tact when expressing our opinions and dealing with each other. It makes the entire experience a lot more pleasant in my opinion.

Also, same applies to the guy who thinks that you have to evaluate music by its historical relevance to other pianists to appreciate it. I personally don't give a shit about whether or not Cage's compositions are considered better by the "musically educated", and I feel sorry for anyone who believes that because they don't like something it is a personally reflection of their own short comings as a listener. Missing the point a bit aren't we?

Also, in my opinion most of that classical stuff is rather boring and uninspired. Some of it is exceptional no doubt about it, but a lot of it is boring and a bit wanky.

There will be new love from the ashes of us.

I just like it, mate.

Dunno. I find it pleasant in the way I find most ambient Aphex stuff pleasant.

I dig the negative space.

I like how RDJ entertains Psychology of Music-type concepts that you tend not to hear elsewhere.

And honestly I would like it as well without the swinging.

In my view, murphy tried to make a well thought out statement. And all credits go to him for doing so. You can ignore me for a bit because i was just having fun with you and especially limpy about taking things so graciously.

I mean, your response to murphy was a one word 'dumb'? Come on. You could try to make a well thought out statement yourself. This is def a pot cattle thing, if you ask me. And it set the gates wide open for some trashtalk, to paraphrase the other pot cattle monkey in this thread.

Please don't respond butthurt. It's pretty useless to get all riled up about my opinion here. It's obvious will be disagreeing with it. And you might as well respond with some grace, instead of a one word "dumb".

after listening to my recording a fair few times over.... loved all of it!

the piano piece is far more satisfying after one has been lost in the dread inducement of the 1st part properly, very honest music :)

and then after the piano the entire piece is rounded off with the sounds of the pendulums ^_^

great stuff!

Do you mean 'a pot kettle thing' ?

The only technical issue I have with the piece / performance is at 05:19 of that Youtube recording. I really don't think that was meant to happen and for me it kind of spoiled the atmosphere of the sedate ending, other than that It's a bloody lovely piece. I was lucky enough to attend the performance and in my opinion the noise by swinging definitely added to the track - it sort of reminded me of the noise of an old machine or broken down mechanical device, and created an atmosphere of death/decay to an already melancholic and introspective piece. I think it also added breathing space to each iteration of the musical phrase, in a similar way the long reverb did with Eno's piano tracks in Music For Airports.

I haven't eaten a Wagon Wheel since 07/11/07... ilovecubus.co.uk - 25ml of mp3 taken twice daily.

the piano pieces were inspired by cage, so if they are uninspired, that means...

the rift has been opened! paradox universe has begun!

btw i like what i've heard of cage, but being a product of late 20th century sonic schizophrenia i require sharp contrasts to hold my attention. enter: dissonance and layzors!

Jesus, some knickers getting in a twist over here, lol

On topic fact:

Seems like with the mechanical sounds and the Doppler effect that the piece is as much about texture as it is about a sequence of notes. Texture is lush, so therefore the tune is lush.

Also I don't understand how the piece could be considered pretentious. If the piano had been on the ceiling, or if it had a little hat on it (p. cute tho imo) it would maybe be pretentious.

Also: Murphy you basically called everyone in here a dingus, which is p. rude. I listen to and enjoy most of those mentioned artists and I still enjoy this piece. Saying that is undeveloped because it doesn't go anywhere is what all the dingus' said about Satie back in the day and he was a true player as we all know now.

Seriously, some of you guys... if you were in the movie 'Total Recall' instead of Arnold Schwarzenegger they would have to change the title to 'Total Retard' (lol jk).
Seriously though, for a second I honestly thought the last couple of pages had been written by a pepperoni pizza because everyone was so cheesed.

Fact:

If you go through life acting like a pizza pie the world will eat you up.

Just some food for thought...

Peace,

Waschbar

ok

i'll admit fault

i should not have undermined the collective tastes of wattm.

i'm sure plenty of you listen to jasionowski, satie, bartok,Schade, cage, Einaudi ,Hikaru, winston and of course cecil taylor …. all the time and own many of their cds/lps etc….and patronize their respective performances.

Finally, someone says it. after reading four page of this thread!

First of all, I like the music in the clip, it suits me. HOWEVER, I can not accept anyone saying that this is a good composition.

I listen 50% of my 10 hours per day, to jazz or classical music. The rest of the music I listen is electronica!

Okay, my thgouht on the clip.

I have no problem about a swinging piano. I think its a smart idea because it can bring interesting texture to music. however, here, the composition is quite flat that even if the piano would do 360's, I couldnt care less. The composition is borderline boring.

But of course, if you dont know Cage's, bartok, schubert sonata's, you will think that this is a beautiful composition.

The argument that this music is interesting because its not made in a DAW is quite shocking. do you guys really only listen to electronica?

I dont want to be negative, but I cannot conceive someone with a large knowledge of music history think that this composition has anything really special or unique. Sure, its a bit warm, I like piano sonata's, I like calming music, I cannot stand for the most part any symphonies, way too excited for me and fake, but this composition is not interesteing enough. The silents are not totally perfect, like if he stick to one idea and one idea only in the whole song?? I cannot conceive any classically trained pianist that would think that the composition is special or profound. Most of the person's here have sadly, not enough musical background to rate this composition accurately. I dont make attacks, but I sincerely beleive that.

No my taste are not the best, I feel quite retarded to even like some electronica I like. But what can you do, I like some big kick and a good simple bassline sometimes!

compared to people saying they adore beethoven symphonies or are able to fully connect with bartok work, I am super envious and wish I was there. not yet, my taste are not fine enough. I love shubert sonata however.

I do not think people in here have no knowledge in music, I more talking in general, but yeah sorry about that.

The piece is boring imo, not enough goign on at all to keep me interested

Its just, this is boring imo and it sucks. I love old aphex music and I fear we will never have that quality back.

I dont know,

at this point if richard shit in an ornate special warp/rephlex logo adorned plate attached to a swinging pendulum ,stuck a plastic musical note symbol [the kind you might put on a b-day cake for a piano player] and a contact mic in it people would be on it!

its amazing the fact that people pick others because how they talk rather then just understand the message.
