Burial - Truant / Rough Sleeper

Over the years i've read many times about people listening to music and it having reactions on them like taking drugs, which i've always thought a bit of ridiculous thing to claim, either that or they have never taken drugs.

Anyway seems as I will now say the same thing, listening to this shit is like being on drugs, and very good drugs to boot.

Burial seems to have more ideas in one track than most have in their careers. Everything he has released has 'classic' stamped on it. Amazing.

that's real nice.

this release has grown on me quite a bit. after everyone left on Christmas night, and after the wife and son when to sleep, I put this on while enjoying another glass of wine in front of the fire. amazon.

Bro, you must be such an awesome dad. I wish my parents listened to great music like Burial. I'm assuming your turning your kid onto this sort of stuff

my little guy loves tunes for sure. it's quite funny. animal collective always gets him going but I expose him to asuch as I can. he was listening to boc and miles davis in the womb and I haven't stopped. car rides are lots of fun.

my biggest regret in life is not being able to play an instrument so I'm not letting that happen with him. he can pick whatever he wants but he has to play something.

don't mean to hijack but yea, the fire crackle and burial crackle were inseparable when I listened on christmas. I don't know which track I like better, they are both stunning.

Being a good dad - 90% musical choices, 10% parenting. Fact.</quote>

part of that 10% is giving him booze in his milk so the music really soaks into his soul without him knowing it on a conscious level.

Its never too late to pick up an instrument. Just pick up a guitar and learn some chords or diddle around on the piano. Thats cool that you exposed him to miles in the womb, i feel like if i ever have a kid, id almost constantly be playing music and try to keep it as eclectic as possible

there's something in here... burial's first album had the shot of the wandsworth/croydon south london area on the cover, and this has... this. it makes a strange and satisfying sort of sense.

I can't wait to buy more music and listen to burial's new drugs.

as much as I'm loving this now I'm struggling with the crackle in rough sleeper. it's just straight fireworks/bottle rockets. but the beginning organs and ending bells are just wonderful.

Man, it seems I'm completely drifting apart from peoples opinions here nowadays. When I see that video all I see is the Burial track with some footage from a NASA video synced to it vaguely plonked on top.

This (apart from maybe the opening/closing theme to Koyaanisqatsi is probably my favourite organ track) -

I haven't eaten a Wagon Wheel since 07/11/07... ilovecubus.co.uk - 25ml of mp3 taken twice daily.

I still hate Truant with a passion.

Rough Sleeper is excellent though. Gets better and better with every listen.

rough sleeper is the one. the most perfect distillation of... coming down and regretting not 'avin some of that gorgeous woman. it's fucking perfect. eroded, half-heard, woozy, sheer fucking beauty is what it is.

Been giving Rough Sleeper a chance on and off all day.

My major problem with that song is the complete needless use of the same old jazzy (and non-sensical) vocals he always uses (especially in the first third of the song). It sounds like she's trying to sing something but she keeps getting interrupted.

What annoys me is that this would make an awesome EP of 4 or 5 coherent separate tracks.

Instead we have 2 shambling messy long tracks that IMO do not work. Its not like they have similar elements or drums or anything running through them.

Ironically, I've been listening to burial all day and I've felt just the opposite. The elements that make up EVERY burial song are as follows (constant moody atmosphere notwithstanding):

1) Wood block percussion (and the variation of drum patterns is minimal)

2) Deep bass synths

3) Loads of crackle and hiss .... reverb etc.

4) Filtered jazzy vocals

Every song has those 4 elements. I know it's not fair to be critical of an album / artist that has been playing through my headphones all day while I work but if you told me I was listening to an album of remixes of a single track by a single artist I would have believed you.

To be fair, that "samey" feeling pervades may artists but not to the same extent that I feel it affects burial. Minimal music for example has many "samey" elements, but that's typically the point. There's still enough variation to feel fresh and exciting.

Variations on a super cool theme. I wonder if he'll make more agressive tracks like Versus, though. I thought I heard a hint of it somewhere in these two new tracks.

When did the badly out of tune down-pitched female vocals become a thing ... What naughty scamp is behind all that nonsense ?
