I would perhaps agree with an influence. But I certainly hear a Moustache influence on Quari, I think fwze and bnc castl are the most Moustache on there though, not sure there's a huge amount of reference within Perlence, but this is just me!

I do disagree with the Recks On/Black Belt comparison but I know how much you love Scorn so it's treading on thin ice! Haha. I certainly see a similar mood, but I think Recks On owes a shit load more to the b boy hip hop stuff. When I heard that the first thing I thought of was the old Rob Brown hip hop tapes.

we agree on bnc castl, but how many old hip hop music sounds that dark with a brooding ambient pad in the background? and on top of that it has those really teary early 2000s drum and bass bass synth sounds, very similar to recks on. No old hip hop used those kind of synths, and not much if any new hip hop does either. They've been dropping a load of mid to later period scorn in their sets the past few years, and to my ears it's the most blatant musical tribute (without actually sampling someone) to an artist they like that they've ever done.

Ah you're probably right to be honest, mate. It's more likely bias on my part as I find Scorn quite boring for the most part! I think I just disagree with the use of the word plagiarism I suppose, I don't consider Recks On to be plagiarizing Scorn at all, but I don't doubt there was inspiration there.

It's tonally similar but as someone who likes to trainspot samples I know it's not.

Anyway, here's the actual source apparently (thanks whosampledwho)

nice find, but TABU who produced the kendrick lamar track are a production team from denmark, so it's the exact same guys from the "Helt Alene track"

so still stolen/homaged/influenced by Alberto Balsam like Awepittance sais

Great track, but does this sample Public Enemy's 'Miuzi Weighs A Ton'? Or at least riff very close to it? It's the first few seconds of the track (the album version is on youtube).

It sounds so close... and OPN has a history in plunderphonics (see: ECCOJAMS Vol. 1). Not sure if I'm right about it, but I'd love to think that he could of based an entire track around 2 seconds worth of Public Enemy.

holy shit

also regards kendrick lamar/alberto balsalm, i admit the beat sounds familiar but i think it's mainly that startled duck noise that makes it seem that way, take that out & i'd never draw a connection

I think that OPN track totally is a PE sample too - that seems like something he'd do - capture a sonic moment and build a track around it. Replica did that with samples from ads and commercials. He's always put so much thought into a lot of his sampling that speaks a lot more than simply referencing a piece of music or doing something for the sake of novelty.

Nice catch!

yeah, especially after watching that redbull academy interview where it's made clear that he's a fan of

A. old hip hop music

B. making space music from sources so unexpected one would think he was joking if the results weren't so straight faced

its not a duck its a chair being dragged across a floor. the hip hop song he posted uses a similar sound. thats the only similarity between the two.

still didn't draw any similarity because of that sound, the pad melody and the way they're sampling a very similar drum stick break screams Aphex Alberto Balsam. that's why i put 'duck' in quotes because it doesnt sound like a duck to me either, but i dont know if im sure its a chair. That's what i thought at first but over the years im beginning to think it might be someone overblowing a Tuba

i don't know man, are you sure you aren't trolling? I only listened for 15 seconds and immediately heard the obvious similarity

maybe some people wouldn't consider this plagiarism but i do since they didn't credit Goblin on the linear notes afaik

you gotta be kidding

you can shoot me right in the face if Tabu never heard alberto balsam and makes a track like that

the airy drums are about the same, so is the bpm and you can play the alberto synth along with it, they just changed a few notes to make it dark and the 'moving chair' ffs

fuck it i don't really care that much, they are both awesome tracks i just tought it was so obvious

over and out :cat:
