Exai Deflation has set in :(

Recommended Posts

K, yep, clearly a ton of people on here have really fallen for the album, and there's some great moments on it for sure, but for the most part it's drawn a total blank on me.

Tracks i dig - Prac-f, 1 1 is, Spl9. Spl9 has really* been blowing my mind the past couple of weeks, incredible track. Love parts of Irlite, Bladelores and YJY UX too.

Apart from that i'm at a bit of a loss :(

Anyone else a bit deflated by it?

I'm taking a few months break from Exai. "Over-listening" and album right after release is never a good idea. At least not for me.

Listened to disc one yesterday for the first time in well over a week, slow and steady is always the way to play new albums, especially from "big guns" like Autechre and I know I will be giving it plenty of airtime. No deflation here... yet,...

Since I didn't get the actual album until a week after release, I am still pumped about it. I usually listen to at least one of the discs daily, and sometimes I'll forget and let disc 2 play a few times in a row before I notice. I'm getting more into Quaristice all of a sudden too though.

I've still been listening to it almost daily for nearly two months now. But I've only heard the second half of Autechre's radio show on March 2nd. I ought to download the entire broadcast and figure out how to sync it to my music device.

To keep it real and analog, I'm gonna start posting to WATMM by writing my posts in fountain pen on hemp paper, putting them in bottles, and throwing them into the ocean.

Maybe try listening on different stereos/headphones, vekoS just the other day loosened itself and blossomed like a flower, on my car stereo system!

Or maybe give the album a break for a couple of weeks and maybe listen to some back cataogue Ae. Oversteps/Move Of Ten have been revealing themselves to me in new ways, post Exai.

for me it doesnt have the staying power of Quaristice or Untilted, but it's still a very good album. I'd rank it about equal to Oversteps in it's relistenability

I think it's an excellent fucking journey. The aural assault of Untilted, some of the variety of Quaristice, and the lush soundscapes of Oversteps. Mad props.

I feel like it doesn't have the beauty of their previous albums, it doesn't seem to last as long. Although it could be my mind just hasn't adjusted properly still. A break can help as someone else said. Over time, Oversteps and Untilted, as well as their whole back catalog, only grows stronger for me. Exai seems to have the opposite effect at the moment. Maybe because it doesn't seem as 'deep', emotionally. Composition wise and sound wise it has not yet come to the heights of a lot of their older tracks. But I know it's all about my mind so I'll have to give it time.

i dip in and out of this album like a playlist on shuffle. i think it was intended to be listened to piecemeal. i don't see myself tiring of it. it is colorful, alive and visceral in a way that a lot of electronic music isn't, and is definitely better than oversteps and move of ten, both of which were, in a word, shit.

i listened to it "proper" yesterday .. after listening to Oversteps. I think that the overall production is better on Oversteps.. seems more like a sequenced, finish product. I dig the jammy vibe to Exai, and i actually really love it, but do not think it is as refined as it could beenhave eb==

Oh my god, you are so hardcore, I've never even been on the same internet as someone who is well ''proper'' like you have been over the last few days, assessing production values, etc.

We need to start incorperating this verb into all aspects of life.

I gave O'steps another listen the other day too and was astonished by the depth and lushness of the production. It was a welcome breath of fresh air.

Exai is something else entirely. Dense, a bit mad, maybe more complicated modulation wise, but like being in a dark cave or medieval ruin. O'steps is like driving on mountain viaducts laden with mist on a perfect Spring sunrise.

nodezsh feels like an expansion of Yuop, which is "lush," but it's sorta one-dimensional in comparison to nodezsh. tracks like nodezsh, YJY UX, runrepik, and irlite (get 0) improve on the oversteps vibe, imo

i don't see exai as lacking depth or detail in comparison, there's possibly more softness and subtlety to oversteps' sound quality/mix.. i do enjoy oversteps more in the context of exai, but still feel a few of the tracks are meager (or superficial) compared to most of the tracks on exai.

Agreed.

But....

I'd rather be fighting anti-matter beings that don't obey the laws of physics with my medieval robot side-kick made of wood and rusty hinges in an underground, cylopean, squamous, pre-satanic cathedral than frolic around gravity-rainbow mountain meadow with the non-euclidean unicorns.

I enjoy the latter but prefer the former.
