I gave O'steps another listen the other day too and was astonished by the depth and lushness of the production. It was a welcome breath of fresh air.

Exai is something else entirely. Dense, a bit mad, maybe more complicated modulation wise, but like being in a dark cave or medieval ruin. O'steps is like driving on mountain viaducts laden with mist on a perfect Spring sunrise.

Agreed.

But....

I'd rather be fighting anti-matter beings that don't obey the laws of physics with my medieval robot side-kick made of wood and rusty hinges in an underground, cylopean, squamous, pre-satanic cathedral than frolic around gravity-rainbow mountain meadow with the non-euclidean unicorns.

I enjoy the latter but prefer the former.

Haha. Amazing.

Exai is also much more complicated, compositionally, than O'steps. I like em both, different wibes for different times.

overall I'd agree the composition is more complicated, but if we're talking strictly melodically i would say Exai is less complicated. I'd say it's more on par with Quaristice or Draft in the melody department.

One of these days i want to try mashing up some of the purely melodic tracks on Oversteps with other mostly beat centric later period AE stuff. I already tried a few times and i could never get the tempos right in Traktor or Ableton. Maybe some manual splicing and cutting is in order. If anyone has any ideas of mashup combos let me know and I'll try them.

yes, there's more melodic emphasis on oversteps. how many ways can it be said? And, what are you gonna do.. WHAT ARE YA GONNA DO

I felt that when listening to oversteps, you could hear that the 'songs' could be easily played on another instrument (keyboard/piano) and would be recognisable as that piece of music. With Exai, the actual production properties seemed to have a higher defining value for the tracks than the musical progressions within

I'm starting to back away a little bit from Exai now. I'm somewhat sad that the fanfare from the last two months has subsided though. Feels like I mostly post on WATMM out of boredom now.

Ae, see you again in 2015? 2016, maybe?

To keep it real and analog, I'm gonna start posting to WATMM by writing my posts in fountain pen on hemp paper, putting them in bottles, and throwing them into the ocean.

BoCfan69 interpreted Exai in a symbolic way.

BoCfan69 believes Exai, when weaved on the micro level, using only synthetic materials it will created a more "abathur" product.

BoCfan69 gives Exai a 7.5/10

Boards of Cockada is not a band, it's a way of life.

Still listening to it at least 3 times a week. Loving it, but Confield will always be my top ae album (closely followed by Untilted).

I just noticed right after I read your comment. Shortest membership I've ever witnessed.

No ideas for combos but eagerly await your results.

i tried it a little bit but the tempos on OVersteps are tricking me. I'm too lazy to do any sort of splicing beyond maybe 1 or 2 cuts per track. What's the best way to automatically calculate tempo detection these days? I have a feeling that the tempos in Oversteps aren't even numbers, or if they are I'm an idiot

i am listening about 3000 times a week but i don't really *get* it yet.....

also all oversteps tempos are celery derivatives and irrational numbers

Maybe try listening on different stereos/headphones, vekoS just the other day loosened itself and blossomed like a flower, on my car stereo system!

Or maybe give the album a break for a couple of weeks and maybe listen to some back cataogue Ae. Oversteps/Move Of Ten have been revealing themselves to me in new ways, post Exai.

Post Exai. yes

Took a week off from Exai and back into it now, this album is fucking killer.

Absolutely! I've stated my love for YJY UX elsewhere, but there are some incredible tunes on here - bladelores obviously (and I'm wondering do I see 'blade lores' in there - e.g. the various areas of expertise of a swordsmith), FLeure, irlite (get0), t ess xi, the whole of disc 1 basically.

And disc 2 is hip-hop beats taken to the max, culminating in the incredibly stellar YJY UX (although I have key(osc), a title which is what Captain Carrot would call a Pune, or Play On Words, and a track which almost - but not quite - avoids finishing the album on a bathetic note. It's just that one oughtn't have anything after YJY UX, unless perhaps 'twere 6852 :music: .lol! Hence I have to reorder key(osc) now - any suggestions as to where on disc 2 it might be better placed?

i'm just starting to like this album more and more, been playing it since it was on i tunes

my favorites right now are fleure wich sounds to me like a reactor meltdown, jatevee c cause it just whomps the shit out of you and it makes my eyeballs flip in the back of my skull

bladelores just keeps sounding better and better and i keep returning to nodezsh

this is the shit of 2013

I'm hardly a closed minded nun. Remember, I'm on a fucking IDM forum.... an IDM forum.. Think about that for a second before claiming people are closed minded nuns.

bladelores does keep sounding better. For the longest time I didn't get what the fuss was about. It sounded like "it could have been made by anyone", as one review said. Just kind of empty and dull, not minimal and amazing like, say, vletrmx21.

But I listened to it stoned last night and really liked it. I still don't think it's one of their best tunes, or even one of the best on the album, but it is interesting, and pleasurable. I think that's how I'd classify most of the album, "interesting, and pleasurable." Unlike, say, Confield, which I'd classify as "fascinating, but disturbing."

After this I listened to geogaddi and I didn't like it, I was quite vomitting at some tracks, I realized they were too crazy for my ears, they took too much acid to play music I stupidly thought (cliché of psyché music) But I knew this album was a kind of big forest where I just wasn't able to go inside.

- lost cloud

I was in US tjis summer, and eat in KFC. FUCK That's the worst thing i've ever eaten. The flesh simply doesn't cleave to the bones. Battery ferming. And then, foie gras is banned from NY state, because it's considered as ill-treat. IT'S NOT. KFC is tourist ill-treat. YOU POISONERS! Two hours after being to KFC, i stopped in a amsih little town barf all that KFC shit out. Nice work!

So i hope this woman is not like kfc chicken, otherwise she'll be pulled to pieces.

What's the opposite of diminishing returns? Exai is typical Autechre in that my first listen has a few highlight tracks which keep me coming back, but then when i listen through again other tracks show themselves to be incredible (see Untilted with The Trees and Fermium at first, everything later). I pretty much disliked Fleure at first and now I love it, same with Runrepik and spl9. I don't think there's a weak track on Exai, which is amazing for a two disc effort.

I honestly don't get how everybody loved it at first, for me it was an alienating listen (not a bad thing). All the muddy, low kick drums and weird, loose synth work made it so difficult a first listen. My favourite tracks were the more immediate ones like jatavee C, Deco Loc and Recks On, but over time it slowly unraveled and now I can't imagine skipping a track. They said with the opening of r ess that they wanted it to be like the listener has to reformat their brain to get into Oversteps, but I feel like that's even more necessary with Exai. It has it's own style, which is definitely varied but has its own set of rules that you have to adjust to before really understanding. I know that probably sounds like nonsense, but it's hard to crystallize this element of Autechre's music that keeps me coming back. Definitely up there with the best ae. I really want them to do an interview so I can get some sort of insight into what they were getting at.
