BoilerRoom TV

I have to say the last few times I've tried to watch the bad dancing and posing around a mediocre DJ makes me cringe somewhat.

I remember when BoilerRoom TV was very cutting edge not too long back but large sponsorship and commercialness have taken over methinks.

When we did the planet mu one there were loads of people there that were boiler rooms people, they were very 'hipster cool'.

But then you wouldnt have wanted to see just our friends, we are really uncool.

yeah you just have to be friends of friends with someone involved. i can get into the london one and im desperate to be one of the pilled up arseholes dancing like maniacs right behind the dj.

but yeah the boiler room isnt so amazing, it gets plenty of amazing djs but only because it invites almost everyone who exists to play there, alot of pish aswell.

Man I'm so happy that I'm not the only one that considered the whole thing ridiculous. Properly cringe worthy for all involved (well in my perspective, I'm sure those cool kids were tweeting and instagramming and tagging their hearts out in order to make their life appear to have meaning). Best example I've seen so far was the SND one, pretty much had to hide behind my fingers through as many minutes as I could manage (which wasn't many) - It's like an extended Nathan Barley sketch:

I haven't eaten a Wagon Wheel since 07/11/07... ilovecubus.co.uk - 25ml of mp3 taken twice daily.

I think its a bit of a shame really, the blueprint of the idea is awesome however the way they do it is more like:

Look at us cool people! you can only watch on your shitty laptop on your own! We are so cool!

I found the 'boiler room' people (the people in charge were cool but their friends I guess) seemed to be there to be seen rather than getting involved

Yeah, I dont like the exclusivity of the nights, I can't see why they just do it as a limited ticket event- I think it would make an awesome atmosphere having 'actual fans' there.

Mu thought of doing a similar thing as a one off after our night, especially as it's all self funded (well in mu's case...maybe we aren't cool enough?)

lol I was going to post the SND vid as an example but was on my shitty phone at the time

I can appreciate watching a good skilled DJ mixing his art but watching a ten the penny house DJ do a chicken impression for 45mins is pretty boring in fact the superstar DJ podium is a very sad cliché now imho only to be fed by posers and Nathan Barleys who normally don't know shit about music anyway. Called me old fashioned but the DJ should be in the background watching me and the rest of crowd not the other way around.

yeah a proper fan base relevant to the artist would make a more interested and 'cool' audience

(or a worse case senario being a lot of 30+ sat around scratching their beards)

Indeed as a concept Boiler Room strikes me as strange, for when I hear an engaging dance track, I feel the need to dance myself, never have I thought "I wish I could watch other people dance to this".

However I completely disagree about the quality of the DJ's and musicians booked by the Boiler Room. I don't follow their bookings religiously so I don't know what the ratio of good to bad is, but there are enough good ones that I will probably never have the time to listen to the recordings of all the good ones.

As a suggestion, if you don't like club music perhaps you should not listen to DJ mixes?

As for the audience, yes, most of them look like hipsters. But 90% of young people I pass on the street do as well, so I feel the generalization is not warranted.

SND

Wow, that is the worst Boiler Room I've ever seen. They looked genuinely bored and started packing before the crowd even started clapping. Amazing.

I wonder what game those two older guys with the computers are playing, judging by their reactions it must be really boring.

Some songs I made with my fingers and electronics. In the process of making some more. Hopefully.

Wait, are you guys complaining about the hipsters trying to twerky slam-dance to SND, or complaining about SND? Because I listened to that entire live set and it’s pretty fucking awesome. You know, if you like SND.

maybe they were trying to impress you and were hoping mike would come over and have a chit chat ;)

but yeah the whole boiler room thing is pretty awkward, could you ever really enjoy your self knowing its being recorded? also can it ever have the same atmosphere a club might have? it seems to lack all atmosphere, maybe a putting it club venue is a bad idea?

the nhk one made me laugh as its him in a bunker looking room with people sitting down drinking beer & talking, seems much nicer & less uncomfortable:

yeah not quite the setting for SND as its an acquired taste but maybe they should have put more of a kick drum in for a crowd, I remember them being a little more heavy when they supported Autechre a while back
