True, and it can easily add to the cheese/wank factor of many tunes if he noodles too much on them - Much like how Squarepusher deteriorated into complete wank-shit with tracks like "andrei". It's really hard to get a good balance between wanting to program cool tracks and just wanting to actually play an instrument. Regardless, I think Paradinas is overall that much more capable of evoking emotion with his melodies because he clearly has a background in music theory and whatnot.

he has a very unique, recognizable sound, especially in his melodies and the way he uses distortion.

For me personally I'd definitely rate him as one of the best. He creates incredibly lush tracks period. For example Kid Spatula, Jake Slazenger, Royal Astronomy, Lunatic Harness, In Pine Effect etc ... guys a fuckin' legend. Definitely not the weakest ... no ways. I'd easily rate him above Autechre & Cylob.

Saw him spinning vinyls a couple of months back and he was a tad shit, crap tune selection, crap mixing...

However Lunatic Harness is a fucking top record, as is tango n vectif and bluff limbo. Strength is definitely composition, beautiful melodies that actually stick in your mind.

really? two of my favorite DJ sets ever have come from him..

Whenever i've seen him laptop dj he's been great (obviously - you'd have to be a right plum if you weren't), but i've seen him on the decks a couple of times and both times he's been quite shit.

The first was a jungle set, absolutely gash mixing but the tune selection was great...i don't know WHAT was going on in the second one. Rubbish tunes, probably managed about two proper transitions, ALL the others were trainwrecks where it he just ended up pushing the xfade over early instead of correcting it.

I don't really care about djing ability but he's been in the business long enough surely...

I've never caught Mike dj but oddly I just prefer the idea of hearing him live. I understand why he prolly does Dj though 'cause I expect doing the whole live thing is more of a fag. That said with Ableton he could prolly do an incredibly sick live set with fuck all hassle.
