New consoles/E3 2013 thread

Personally I think gaming has never been better. Just because there are a bunch of braindead annualized modern military shooters, that doesn't take away form the Bioshocks, the Portals, the Read Redemptions and the Mass Effects of this world. Plus there are a ton of great indie games released every year now, that whole scene didn't even exist just a few years ago.

I feel I have played at least 3-4 truly amazing games per year, in the X360/PS4 generation. With previous generations I can only remember playing like 1, maybe 2, amazing games per year.

The new consoles has just been released, and launch titles always seem to be very underwhelming and disappointing (if Watch Dogs had not been delayed, it would probably have been a whole different story).

I personally can't find many of these launch titles in previous generations that I would have bought on release:

Most times it's best just to wait for 6 months or a year to buy a nextgen console after its release (mr. obvious over her).

Also, there's a patch that'll fix that coming.

Oddly it was Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved that made me want a 360. Just so smooth and fast and colourful, and FUN

YES. That goes for any game with me really. I generally get turned off by mediocrity if a game isn't weird to some extent

They will patch this... their plan to get everyone to embrace Music Unlimited backfired.

Yeah, pretty sneaky of Sony to try that - but, they claim there was little feedback from the userbase about using the PS3 to play audio CDs/MP3, so they didn't build the feature in. Yeeeeah, riiiiiight.

If you guys had one video that impressed you from new console gamings please share it, almost everything I've seen looks about on par (from just a textures, models, complexity point of view, not largness of world) with GTA5 on the Ps3

Really, YouTube videos don't do games that run at 1080/60 justice - Killzone looks very impressive in person. It's true, there's not much of a leap between PS3 and PS4, but the refinements and solid frame rates are welcome and do enhance the quality of the games - I couldn't help thinking how good the next Uncharted will be with this hardware spec.

I think part of the problem is for a game developer the price of admission to make 'serious' content on a console is extremely high.

IT has built in the inherent problem of having such an unreachably high budget for most people that 'real' games at least in their current iteration will always be extremely expensive to make. Hotline Miami is a perfect example of an indie game that, while still being a shooter (and really, a simple one), is able to win over the audience with it's aesthetic and really capitalise on the zeitgeist of shooting games, and they've created something that can garner a cult following.

 

Jonathan Blow's next game The Witness (out on PS4 soon) looks really good - not super realistic, but a very well-realized game world.

That was Resogun for the PS4 for me - and what finally made me decide to get a PS4 on launch versus waiting. I'd still recommend people wait though.

Yeah, I'll get the PS4 eventually, when there are some good games for it, the failure rate is lower, and it has a full feature set. I see no good reason to get one before well into the next year.

half the time i use the ps3 for playing music, i hope it's still gonna play my wav and mp4 files aswell
