Best Autechre album for a beginner?

Recommended Posts

Guest NC23

Hi guys, I've been a fan of Boards of Canada, Squarepusher and Aphex Twin for ages and been thinking of getting into Autechre for a while now. I know opinions vary - but which is the best album to start with as they have a lot of them (and which are widely available)? Other artists not on the Warp that I'm into of the same genre include Loscil and Carbon Based Lifeforms; thanks!

I started with Confield. No regrets.

But maybe start with the '97 outputs, like Chiastic Slide.

But as I've failed to get any of my friends into Autechre, don't take my advice...

This wikipedia article ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autechre#History ) puts the albums into what is considered their trilogies or eras; I'd listen to one era at a time. I started listening after the shuttle had launched but that hardly matters when you're talking about the electronic perfection that is Autechre. Confield was my first listen and blew me away.

LP5

Some songs I made with my fingers and electronics. In the process of making some more. Hopefully.

Autechre is one of those artists which is really interesting to go through chronologically. Also, they're debut is fairly accessible. I personally think there sound gets more and more experimental throughout the years so its best to get introduced to their newer sounds chronologically. They never really stick to one sound so it's interesting to hear the progression. Don't forget the EPs as well!

Wow, thanks for all the replies, much appreciated! Another question - anyone know any other good websites where I can purchase these in CD form apart from the usual Amazon, Play, etc? I understand some of their earlier work it put of print maybe? Rather have a CD than mp3 files.

LP5

"They're about guns, lasers, robots with laser guns in space. Monsters from the future. Explosions. Sylvester Stallone doing a backflip on top of a spike while Robocop carries a ghost up a mountain. Bombs and swords and that... IDM is awesome."

Bleep ALMOST has all of their cds in stock, except for the first three and LP5. https://bleep.com/artist/71

Norman records has the first three in stock, but it's more expensive. http://www.normanrecords.com/artist/818-autechre

And Amazon works fine also.

If you can't find something you want on amazon, bleep, or any of the other suggested sites, then Discogs is always an option.
