Amber. Masterpiece.

If you enjoy CBL and Loscill, Amber will probably be the one of their early albums you will like the most (on first listen, that is!)

But the chronological suggestion is a good one... only they got so many releases, it would take ages to work your way through.

You could do this: Get Amber (or Incunabula) and get one of the recent ones (like Exai) - See what style you dig more, then get some more releases from that era.

Also yes, the EPs are fantastic, Cichlisuite and Envane being my favorites.

Wow, thanks for all the replies, much appreciated! Another question - anyone know any other good websites where I can purchase these in CD form apart from the usual Amazon, Play, etc? I understand some of their earlier work it put of print maybe? Rather have a CD than mp3 files.

If you can't find something you want on amazon, bleep, or any of the other suggested sites, then Discogs is always an option.

Yeah, on Discogs you can buy used copies of out of print CDs at (mostly) reasonable prices (although not all: CBL - World of Sleepers is usually on there for 80+ € but I got it for 15€ brand new when buying directly from the label...!)

I bought some 10 CDs there from various sellers and they were all in very good condition (as listed) - it's also nice to be in contact with people who have the albums that interest you, you can browse their collections and they sometimes have other good stuff up for sale.

My first was LP5, after only having experience with RDJ's albums. A guy in a mainstream dance music store recommended it to me when I bought Surfing on Sine Waves. Took one listen and it melted my brain, in the best way. So that's the album I tend to recommend to those who are starting out.

I started with Amber and Untilted, their latest at the time. I thought the former was nice relaxing grooves and the latter only sounded like noise. The first time Untilted clicked (and it was a sudden, hard click, much like the percussion in Pen Expers), it was the most initially blown away I've ever been by an electronic music album. Really ripped my world apart.

But if that had never occurred, I thought the chance of falling in love with any of them would have been highest with LP5. It's a trip in a Rama-like intergalactic psychedelic clothes dryer without the overwhelming brooding gruesomeness of the early-200s material. Maybe you could try this once or twice to give you just a taste of what they're all about.

But I especially agree with going through chronologically, and thoroughly. Take some time to get to know the world you're in before moving on to the next. Include the EPs. They may be tracks that didn't "fit" into the albums, not at all because they aren't as good. Mostly because they are thematically elsewhere - maybe another continent on the same planet.

Simple.

Start at the beginning and work your way through chronologically.

From what I've understood, this is the most recommended approach for newcomers.

The video for Second Bad Vilbel was my very first Ae encounter ever. Listening to EP7 for the first time back in 1999 completely changed my understanding of them, when I previously only heard Amber and Tri Rep.

To keep it real and analog, I'm gonna start posting to WATMM by writing my posts in fountain pen on hemp paper, putting them in bottles, and throwing them into the ocean.

Don't justify this thread with a response. I'm guessing the noob was drunk when he posted this. File under 'boc and children'.

Thanks for all the advice guys. General consensus is to go chronologically. Time to save up!

Looks like ill start with Incunabula. Although LP5 and Amber got mentioned a lot too

Incunabla/Amber is the way to start, it's much better/more rewarding to hear their sound evolve.

I'm surprised no one said to start with the EPS- 1991-2002 compilation. It covers a huge chunk of their career. From there you can choose albums from around your favorite EP. Yes, it's that simple.

Yet another good idea ... hard to pick the best.

Oh yeah and don't start with Oversteps, it's totally different to the rest (and I personally think it's a piece of shit, although half of watmm loves it)

This looks like a good box set to get started with! Does anyone know the cheapest place to obtain this new? I know it's currently £30 on bleep.

I'd like to retract my earlier recommendation, and replace it with "Amber".

There will be new love from the ashes of us.

I started with Oversteps, well I actually started with the most popular tracks on Spotify, then I started listening the newest album at that time, that was Oversteps. I always start by the newest album.

Let's not turn this into an argument. We all have different views on things such as music formats, and I think that's important to respect. I personally love all music, regardless of the format. Because that's just how I am, you know.

i dont trust anyone that defends me because i dont know if they're being serious or not, and less in this forum with such a high level of irony. anyway, trusting anyone won't take me much far in life.
