I'm hardly a closed minded nun. Remember, I'm on a fucking IDM forum.... an IDM forum.. Think about that for a second before claiming people are closed minded nuns.

i think the search engine on Watmm could be improved and more useable and this would mostly eliminate the cluster-fuck that has become genban.

If we do that, general banter will pretty much only be about political discussion and funny links. A political discussion forum would be better.

I wouldn't mind a subforum for that, but this I do think that if we get one this is a better candidate. Media mixes in with music enough that it might not be necessary.

edit:

But yes, I would vote at least slightly in favor of a media subforum.

why dont you just not click on the thread? The same way i don't click on like 50% of the threads in watmm that are just really boring

what for ? it's like meeting up with friends and having to go to a different room when the topic changes to "media". keep the banter fluid and unified, i say.

the same logic can be applied to music forum as well but there are pretty distinctive groups of people on watmm, those who are interested in music only and those who are interested in music and everything else as well, so it makes sense to divide it, even autechre commended it in some interview so there's no going against that. but for genban - not really.

Go back to being one forum without any subforums at all. Have everything on one page.

Phobiazero already did that. I prefer the organization that WATMM currently provides.

To keep it real and analog, I'm gonna start posting to WATMM by writing my posts in fountain pen on hemp paper, putting them in bottles, and throwing them into the ocean.

phobiazero has abandoned it. busy selling dub turbo.....

www.braindance.net is the old planet mu board revived in zombie form

what would be cool here is a one page 'anything goes' subforum. instead of banning ppl you just let everybody post there and post any topic, even ones that are covered by subforums. WATMM CLASSIC or something. like WATMM is a shopping mall and WATMM classic would be the area with the sushi and pizza stands. in that subforum you could talk about movies, music, aphex twin, etc. paid members only would be fine with me. then in gen banter ppl could say fuck off politics fuck off spamming your tracks etc then say "go to watmm classics subforum where u can say what u like"

I agree with this. splitting out all the media-related stuff would mean a big drop in new genban topics.

Make it like autechre.nu back in the day; just one long thread.

I remember ae.nu, a decade before my WATMM membership. I'm quite certain I was on there at the same time S. Booth and RDJ were posting on there one day. Whether or not anyone believes it matters not to me. It was back in June or July 2002 if I recall.

It melts my mind to realise it was so long ago. I really have been around on idm forums for far too long.

For me there was a hiatus of several years before I joined this one.

Nah. I'll say it again: I wish there was a way to add tags to a topic, and then you (the user) could just enable or disable tags as you wanted, so all the threads you wanted to see would appear in one big list. I think this would unify the community more while still allowing one to choose not to view stuff. It could even allow for nsfw stuff to appear back on the forums, since it simply wouldn't be visible to those who had deselected that tag.

I don't know if the technology even exists for this, just dreamin'. But it sounds like the most elegant solution to me.

I like the idea. It would allow people to filter information, and cut down the time spent on navigation.

I think, if this model were adopted, more topics would have to be displayed at once.

Lots of good feedback, responses, etc. - in short:

So far, it looks like the consensus is NOT to have a separate Media section - I'll give it until the end of the week and decide something next Monday.

The suggestions of NSFW subforums and the like are not going to happen - the rules haven't changed - relaxed, perhaps - but that's up to everyone being reasonable and not going overboard.

Yes, the search sucks (sometimes) - I personally haven't had too many problems finding things, but yes, it's terrible overall. Hopefully IPB 4.0 (the next big version of the forum software) will address this - so far, no mention of improving search from the developers in the sneak previews they've been sharing. There are a few third-party search options, but they all cost money, or are difficult to implement. Anyone with experience in this area that is willing to advise/assist is welcome to get in touch with me.

Tagging is all well and good (and the forum has a tagging system now), but unless everyone uses it (and it's made mandatory), tagging is only as good as the people who take the time to tag things accurately and consistently.

i think you should put in the subforum despite the poll. we should try it out, if it goes poorly, you move the threads back to gen ban and we forget about it (like the cylob subforum).

While we're talking about subforums, a general internet trend I've noticed: If you have a specific Politics or Philosophy forum it will attract inflexible minds that have an axe to grind. You're much more likely to have a decent Poltical or Philsophical discussion on a music forum than you are on a Politics or Philosophy forum.

Doesn't really apply to media subform but I thought I throw that out there.
