i hadn't heard anything about him for ages - i like his stuff but am not a huge fan/follower, and tbh he was one of those people i actually thought was already dead... so this announcement was a surprise in that respect.

He was staying busy with different projects and chimed in with an op-ed about Yeezus, so I was pretty shocked, even knowing of his health problems.

His death really hit me hard, even as a more casual fan. I won't rehash all the things that made him so important and edgy and blah blah I just really found him to be a sincere musician up until his death. Very, very few of his peers in pop music from that era who are still alive maintained such a work ethic without either succumbing to a quiet retirement, more commercial-friendly work, or some other celebrity-oriented venture. I'd put him way ahead of Dylan or Springsteen any day, no questions asked. There was something just more subtle and a little dark in his music, even at it's most beautiful and positive. RIP.

not the biggest vu fan although i do love the self titled album. but lou reed is just massively influential, on all mediums. i don't think i'd have william gibson without him.
