I haven't listened to it, though i'm in disbelief Burial used these words.

Fair point, although having heard this EP, nothing would surprise me anymore.

I don't understand the message. Is the kid being bullied because he's trying to sell drugs on another kids patch?

You're kidding but I've been thinking the thematic samples in Rival Dealer might be a somewhat misguided attempt to tie it in with the other two. It's the hardest track he's ever done, replacing his regular R&B and 2-step influences with hip hop and hardcore. The ambient outro is much closer to those on his previous releases, too, not at all as overwhelmingly sentimental as the other two tracks. If you look at the 12-inch, despite Come Down To Us being a couple of minutes longer they squeezed that on one side with Hiders and dedicated a whole side to Rival Dealer. The two sides are like polar opposites and it feels a bit forced to fit them into one narrative. Maybe that's all part of the concept but I have no clue what the title has to do with the anti-bullying message.

Yeah I'm really forcing myself to find something - maybe there's some kind of detached escapism in it's old school hip-hop samples ("Pail In Full" and the Lord Finesse track) that would be something many teens would listen without any literal connection to make to their lives. Good point about how the 12" is split. Maybe he couldn't release Come Down To Us/Hiders any other way.

Never read this about "Paid In Full" until today...I know it's the Ashley's Roadclip breakbeat specifically but Paid In Full is more or less synonymous with that break.

Coldcut were paid 700 pounds for their remix work. Despite its success, Eric B. dismissed the remix as "girly disco music"; Rakim, however, called it the best remix he had ever heard.[6]

Rival Dealer is such an awesome name. It has vibe to it, sliding on a stylistic cliche territory yet feeling real. I would watch a movie under this name (Pusher trilogy is pretty good, for example). I suspect he chooses names purely for aesthetical purposes. But i don't like the angel's spell idea, say something outside of your marketed image. Angel's spell? A robot could generate that at this moment in time for Burial.

i always forget that those who are unfortunate enough to live in the UK and who smoke pot probably still have to obtain their marijuana from 'dealers' and as a result there are probably actual rival dealers. Thank fucking god i live in California *walks into store to buy a 10 dose pot brownie before Hobbit*

The track title actually helps giving the track an extra cinematic dimension to it… to me anyways. I can't help but imagining a drug war going on in the second part of the track, and a dead drug dealer, lying dead on the concrete (in the style of a ending scene to a movie) when I hear the final part of the part track.

A bit corny maybe, but I fucking love it. I wish more music had this kind of cinematic feel to it.

If only it didn't have that silly titanic horn at the end.

And what goes for goes for Hiders and Come Down To Us, I'm really starting to love those two tracks... cheesy or not. People can make fun of the anti-bullying themes of the EP, but I simply find it sympathetic tbh. That Wachowski sample just gives me the chills for example.

And again.. I know it's corny as hell. But I'm kind of passed that, and now I just like it for what it is, which is music that makes me feel something. That is more that can be said for most "cool" music I hear these days.

Nothing cringeworthy about this post at all, and I agree. Further, I understand how people who never liked Burial would hate this EP. The thing I don't get is that the people who DO like Burial, think that this release is so much different than a lot of his past efforts. Sounds like Burial to me.

"... You Look different..."

Well, i can recognise new stuff as Burial's amongst thousands...

But still it's cool

There's no shuffling in the beats, it's not syncopated and weird. It's standard and something you'd hear on any old garbage on the radio

Listen to Shutta or South London Boroughs and notice the massive decrease in quality from that style.

Very different from those tracks, and that era of Burial indeed. I've perceived similar levels of emotion in some of his other songs though.

This EP is far more Weird than his early stuff. I Mean I love his early stuff but its essentially just a pretty awesome take on 2-step Garage.

I think its a good thing that he is expanding his sound, South London Boroughs is an amazing EP but if he was still making stuff like that now it would be pretty boring wouldn't it? The guy is taking risks and switching stuff up you cant really knock him for that even if you do think it sounds turd.

Thanks user487363530. And user4873635301. Now 48736353001.

I understand where he's coming from. But how he edited the video ("the-the-the"), makes him look like a douche a bit.

I really wish he'd stop doing that - he does some quite good reviews but the editing style just removes any of the credibility of them.

I haven't eaten a Wagon Wheel since 07/11/07... ilovecubus.co.uk - 25ml of mp3 taken twice daily.

Dude would be tough to hang out with. I imagine he's quite the pretentious douche.

it's not dancefloor-oriented like his earlier stuff. even if every track from that earlier era wasn't necessarily intended for the dancefloor, it still had that aesthetic. rival dealer still completely sounds like burial in terms of emotion and atmosphere, though. it just sounds like burial doing a different style.

while I dont hate this, I have a hard time beleiving someone would listen to the ep over and over again, it has that quality that once you listened to it, theres nothing much to revisit.

Its really sad that hes going into this direction, I hoped that he would go deeper, and this isnt deep at all. its so first degree music, no dimension, one directional music.

Untrue

This ep seems to fire off loads of really naff associations in my brain: James Horner film soundtracks, Rick Ashley, Xmas charity singles, 'rise again' by Gabrielle, sad music from lord of the rings when an elf dies or something.

Strangely though, I still quite like it.

i think that is the point of doing 1 off ep's, he gets to explore various directions without fully committing. i like the idea of that. i highly doubt the next ep will sound like this at all.

see you christmas 2014.

I dunno, you'd think that I'd like Burial, it's dark, it's a bit esoteric, the track names are awesome ... but everything I heard so far is kinda dull and sometimes cringeworthy (yeah I don't even like Untrue that everybody likes), but this new stuff is gotta be a new low for him, right? I'm listening to Hiders Hyperdub 2013 at the moment and it is almost unlistenably bad. What's his problem?

The new EP is on daily rotation for me.. addictive....

As is usual with new releases i'm going through the back-catalogue too......

Good stuff....................... here's an old vid i made of near dark....

I'd like to give it the Christmas night test. after all the famy is gone. little man fast asleep clutching his favorite new toy. fire still raging. multicolor light refractions bouncing off the snow on the lawn. fresh glass of family-made wine.

only this time I'm afraid the wife is going to just lol and walk out leaving me wondering why I'm listening to this.
