I never said they are losing fans, I'm sure they saw a surge of fans over TH. However, I wonder how many of the curious, first time listeners who bought it were converted to fans? I suspect that a lot of those fans were drawn in by the buzz (first new album in X years!) and the marketing, but won't stick around. I think it'll be a sugar rush and then crash, with some of the die hards still around.

Don't get me wrong I would love to get excited about BoC again.

After this I listened to geogaddi and I didn't like it, I was quite vomitting at some tracks, I realized they were too crazy for my ears, they took too much acid to play music I stupidly thought (cliché of psyché music) But I knew this album was a kind of big forest where I just wasn't able to go inside.

i kinda doubt there will ever be hype of this size concerning boc ever again. especially since TH got a pretty lukewarm response and most of the end of the year lists that list it usually are just happy we got new boards of canada album this year, not really that happy with the music itself. it's not really the band's fault the expectations were so high there was no real way of meeting them, but that's life.

Another thing to consider - When BOC last had an album out (8 years ago), how music was consumed was way different than it is today - social media is playing a much larger role in how word of a new album gets spread, etc. I am sure a lot more people that would have never even known about BOC got exposed to TH (and potentially dug up their back catalogue), and might think the newer material is better than say stuff like Geogaddi or MHTRTC.

I think the biggest mistake any artist can make is to make something for their fanbase and not something they themselves are wanting to make.

I'd have to agree. 'Cuz then it feels more like an obligation to flatter than artistic self-expression - a mistake too many artists (especially mainstream) make I think.

'luke warm' reponse? look at the TH wiki page and see all of the ratings from the media for the album - most of which are 8/10 and above. I think it was received amongst the media really well, and looking back at the fan responses on twoism/watmm, I recall the majority of people enjoying the album a lot.

the guy said that the album received a luke warm response - you can't deny the media ratings plus the majority of fans liking the album. yes of course, all music is subjective. however the 'luke warm' response seems to be in relation to a minority of people on this forum.

that's actually in stark contrast to what I've heard from people (not on WATMM).

but in any case, trying to use media ratings as a barometer for anything where Boards of Canada is concerned is a bit silly.

I was kinda surprised they weren't on Coachella's line up this year. Given how long Ae is taking to do their tour compared to previous albums, I've been wondering if perhaps a joint tour is in the cards as that would generate pretty impressive ticket sales.

In terms of their last album, I would say that its staying power is pretty weak even though I really enjoyed it at release. There are some great tunes but as a whole it just doesn't grab me (same with TCH). Given the number of used copies on vinyl I see popping up at Amoeba whenever I go there, I'm guessing many feel the same way.

not really. it holds the lowest rating of all the boc albums on rate your music for example. i get what you're saying but campfire headphase got even better response and it fizzled about as quick as TH hype. but maybe its just the fast times we're living in. dunno.

Yes, media ratings are too biased and way less reliable than the subjective feelings of a misanthrope with a propensity for pissy rants!

i'm both flummoxed and bamboozled. not for any particular reason, just generally.

Indeed. People who don't have the courage to say things directly to me are inferior humans.

People like that aren't even worth your time, m8.

somehow I apparently sidestepped the Alzado wrath, when I've basically become the most caustic troll on the BoC subforum, heh. Schwing!

In all seriousness though I wish I liked TH more. I like my role as a "Campfire apologist" (I really do love that album) more than a TH troll.

Basically I agree with autopilot's two line review in the other thread: "The rest of the album is trying too hard. It's kind of embarrassing."
