Playing The Angel and Sounds of the Universe was their last decent albums, really not feeling Delta Machine at all.

I have to agree - Delta Machine I had high hopes for, and honestly there's really no track on it I really care to relisten to...

What's a good album/s to start with? (I've only heard one album and can't remember what it was but I remember enjoying it!)

Music for the Masses! Although for me DM aren't really an album band. Music for the Masses and Violator are probably the ones that work best when listened to as a whole, but most of their albums have three or so horrible sappy songs that ruin the mood. So I'd say pick your favourite tracks from the period that goes from Some Great Reward to Violator, plus Everything Counts and Get the Balance Right.

Also, I really recommend their B-sides and mixes. The best about DM for fans of electronic music is the instrumental bits where they try some neat production idea, and there are lots of these in their mixes.

Been on a bit of a DM trip myself having seen this thread, been away from them for far too long.

Best concert intro ever, saw them live at Crystal Palace on this tour. One of the best concerts I've been to...

I've got that cd single, contains the awesome (?) Route 66 cover version. DM were as big as U2 in the states in the late 80s, I always found it strange how little recognition they got in the UK (from the music press and radio etc)

Yeah…I made the trek down from Scotland for that Crystal Palace gig. Just amazing. Sisters of Mercy were darn good too…"enjoy the puppet show" were Eldritch's last words, IIRC...lol...

Blimey, you've got a good memory. I'd totally forgotten they were the support, which is strange as I was a big Sisters of Mercy fan too at the time. I now remember it being a bit weird seeing them play in the bright sunshine, didn't quite fit the mood.

Just wondering how I could forget Never let me down, Stripped, Behind the wheel, Strangelove. There are even more. An endless list!

Anyone know Oberkorn, it was a B-Side? Its different and I loved it. But forgot why. Need to re-listen.

Yeah, it's a gloomy instrumental, a bit like the interlude between Blue Dress and Clean. Incidentally, that bit reminds me of the little tune BoC inserted after Sixtyten in MHTRTC... I wonder if that was an influence?

Yours? If so, wanna tell about it? I'm curious and jealous, obviously.

yeah, it's mine, i worshipped DM back then. i think my brother won some kind of ticketmaster lottery system they had set up specifically for that day's show, and he was one of the first to buy tickets as some kind of pre-sale, so we ended up pretty much front and center in row 6.

it was an amazing, if surreal, day. it definitely had a festival feel to it, starting earlier in the day. if i remember correctly, it was light out when all the opening acts (thomas dolby, wire, omd) played.

DM were great, they always were in concert. i was wondering how they'd be at such a large venue, the previous time i had seen them was at the forum in inglewood, which held like 15k, so the rose bowl was quite a leap, though sitting in row 6 i couldn't really tell. it was pretty strange to turn around and see the sea of people going back. a couple years earlier it also would have been pretty unthinkable that DM could fill the rose bowl but yeah, they were great. i think it started raining during "blasphemous rumours", or maybe that's me romanticizing the day.

it was a long time ago, i wish i had more to memories to share, or that there were camera phones back then.

Here's my ticket from '88, plus my two all time favourite Depeche Mode tracks.

nice

"shake the disease" is probably in my top 10 tracks of all time, by all artists.

i prefer "edit the shake" to the single version (like with most 80s DM singles that were released with 12" versions):

Yeah, I dug out my old Dischi Ricordi version of 12" (bought on summer holiday in Italy, proper 80s) to check out the Edit the Shake version. And that one is more annoying than cool.

Extended is good though!

The Something To Do (Metalmix) on the B side gave the 13 year old version of me some food for thought regarding sampling possibilities, I remember.

I quite enjoy what they do. I will always be bias towards Black Celebration and prior, but this has me captivated since its release.

New remix released last week by Boys Noize, decent slab of electro, but the origional has the tons of space to fill in with dreams.
