i would argue they have. Just watched that beach video expecting not to see any actual beheadings (because almost all the other beheading videos like James foley cut out the beheading) but jesus christ that was intense. They do like HD closeups on the waves of the ocean completely red from blood, could be color corrected for extra effect in post production. Either way weird as fuck

 

ISIS seemed to have jumped in at the perfect time, when websites like Ogrish don't really exist anymore. There was an era of the internet where seeing stuff like this wasn't really a big deal, lots of websites were nothing but real death videos but I feel like this has extra impact now because of a lack of these types of websites

 

i think another factor about their videos is that they're always current. when you watched those "gore/snuff" type videos on the web, some were old, others took place a while back, and they just floated around the web to satisfy curious minds that wanted to see "the most extreme/shocking thing".

that's true, except for Iraq war gore from both sides, which there was a heaping amount of. By my last count there were about 30 beheadings of hostages in Iraq from 2003-2005, about 10 of them were captured on video. Nobody seemed to make a big deal about it though, probably because it would hurt the war PR effort. Now it's different because the more beheading videos come out the stronger the pull is for us to involve ourselves militarily there. They tried it at the very beginning with the nick berg video, but it quickly backfired and seemed to actually turn more US citizens off from the war effort, so every subsequent beheading video posted to the internet from Iraq was virtually ignored by the US media. In a weird way they used our fake beheading video as an excuse to downplay the other future real beheadings imo. They even used our fake beheading as a fake excuse to kick out several Al Jazeera branches from Iraq after they tried to murder several Al Jazeera teams with US weapons. What im trying to say is that ISIS high production snuff videos started coming out at the perfect time for the US war machine. Obama is not going to put in ground troops immediately, but I guarantee with 100% certainty that by 2016/2017 US soldiers will be on the ground in a combat role openly in Iraq again and probably in Syria too. The only remaining question is will we let Assad sit in power or not, I highly doubt we will.

 

Regarding the videos: the sheer availability of HD cameras has made all captured deaths worldwide more visceral, surreal, and disturbing (or if it's "accident" footage and stuff - oddly more realistic to those who otherwise haven't experienced death firsthand). I mean, literally just in the last year or so. I stumbled upon r/watchpeopledie on reddit from months ago and it's absolutely surreal. In particular a video from the far less fucked but still often disturbed r/WTF thread that was morbid in the most fascinating and sad sense was one of a piranha attack victim. Link [here] (nsfw/nsfl warning). The HD quality made it look oddly fake, it was even on youtube for hours.

Anyway, back to ISIS and war in general, it's amazing how much brutal combat footage is immediately available from Syria, Iraq and elsewhere where wars are being fought (East Ukraine is still a mess btw) whereas it's hard to find any footage remotely as engaging or disturbing from say, Fallujah in 2004, or anything from the post-invasion insurgency, which was absolute hell. Some of the most horrific beheading videos came from Chechnya in the 90s probably had completely different tone to those who came across them after long downloads and likely long build-ups, and in that sense might of seemed more disturbing but the content is equally as godawful. Now it's literally a click away and a couple seconds of loading to see the same brutality.

RE: intervention, I'm skeptical of anything beyond covert ops/monitoring and our air strikes (a lot of which are daytime close air support missions, which are quite risky. Ironically they're done with A-10s, which infantry love but is perpetually threatened by budget cuts to make more space for the fucking moneypit F35 program) There's a good chance Obama is just waiting it out, as is the majority of the top brass. The CIA director flat out said it'd be preferable to let Assad stay in power at this point, and I don't disagree. There's a reason we didn't pull another Libya, which itself is a fragile "contained" insurgency.

I'm really curious about the Kurds and the Peshmerga, they're literally the only effective anti-ISIS fighting force (Iraq's army is crippled by corruption and lackluster leadership). They are also one of the few groups who uses military aid effectively and without "losing it" to the opposition. This will come off as likely un-PC or simplistic, but they're the one group I've always rooted for.
