sorry pal I haven't read all the pages heh. just thought it should be brought up anyway

I said this earlier

"Are they lacking in attention because they are female, or do men have a more innate ability to make good sounding music? "

Genders are socialized into certain roles it's obvious. The bold being a result of the italicized...

But people suddenly responding to me inferring I'm advocating female only porn when I'm discussing the music biz? wtf

Why, instead of making personal attacks, would you the community of WATMM, not just read the posts and answer the questions?

Everyone thinks they know people on here, and you've all made really shitty assumptions about my personality when I ask questions simply to be educated. Let's take A/D. Instead of reading the actual posts I made to see the questions I've asked and to counter the questions, he's made a personal attack and somehow assumed I'm a very privileged person.

If you think you can make accurate assumptions about people based on text on a screen, you need to take a course in digital inter-mediated communication.

Welp, I tried. I think a lot less of you, Stephen. If you ever decide to look at the issue instead of trying to dig yourself out of the stupid hole you made, there's tons of great reading on the subject.

Read. The fucking posts. In this thread. I said multiple times I believe we shouldn't be identifying people based on their gender but instead based on their individual merit, their individual person.

What is wrong with that?

Instead of attacking and putting people down, why wouldn't you just respond and try and educate someone? this whole thread has been attacking other people instead of regular discourse.

How do you not see that? I generally regard you as intelligent but right now you're not showing it at all.

I was clearly exploring the issue (EDUCATING MYSELF BY ASKING QUESTIONS) before people started labeling me as sexist and inferring all kinds of stupid things that were never said.

basically the reason why all-male nights don't equal equality is the same reason all-white meetings don't. women and non-white ('people of colour' - a term I find inadequate btw) are subject to many layers of discrimination even from people who don't think they are prejudiced. that is the inequality, and events like this are an attempt to balance the scales a bit.

However, I do think female or POC events that actively exclude people are basically trying to right a wrong with another wrong. By all means promote female electronic music but if men were refused entry it would be wrong, btw I know that is not the case itt. By the same token I don't think POC nights are necessarily racist or discriminatory either but I think they go about it wrong when they explicitly state that white people are not allowed to attend. I just don't think it's a constructive attitude. It reminds me of people in my fb contacts that post stuff that essentially states that all white men are racist and sexist and generally oppressive. I get dissapointed that they fall into the same generalisation trap that opresses them in the first place. Thankfully people with that attitude are in the very small numbers.

My mentality as well, if they are in fact exclusionary. I hope some day there is a tipping point where these groups are not so disadvantaged that they need "exclusive" promotion based on these general factors (gender, race, sexual orientation etc).

However, the third statement I bolded. My question this whole time has been, is it necessary to promote an artist as a good artist as female or isn't it adequate to just say he/she is a good artist?

For example would you refer to Bjork as an "accomplished female artist" or just an "accomplished artist"...?

Nope. Gender is irrelevant to good music. Good music is good music. Doesn't mean you not allowed to do that kind of thing though.

Example: Whenever Black History Month comes around you get people of a StephenG persuasion saying "hur, why is there no White History Month".

The answer is of course that every month is White History Month.

yeah lol idk. like say you had a regional featured music night i.e. 'music of winnipeg' or some such thing. big deal yeah? no one would say 'derp im not from winnipeg but i want people from where i am to be able to play bc im an srupid idiot'. if someone did, everyone would immediately recognize that that person is an idiot and even that person with what little capacity they had for thought would know it was true. so why is it a problem when it's women or black people or whatever? it's just featuring a group of people coming from a unique background that you don't hear from very often.

OK, I just re-read all your posts. Correct me if I'm wrong, but you think that there shouldn't be a women-only electronic night, because it's discriminatory against male producers.

Is it? Yes, absolutely.

That would be bad if it were a majority case. But the truth is that the world is currently biased towards men almost all the time. We get paid better. People listen to us for our ideas and not our appearance. We're allowed to lead every single field, money-wise and ideologically.

It's a MEN ONLY sign that doesn't need to be explicit. It's obvious. It's so big that you don't even see it. You see one or two examples to the contrary and you think sexism is over. It's not. It's the norm.

Having a safe place where a minority group are encouraged to showcase their talents is the only way to encourage equality in a scene as male-dominated as electronic music. WOMEN ONLY events look bad for having to say WOMEN ONLY - but that's because MEN ONLY events never have to say it. And guess which group is going to be harassed on the way to the bathroom and have their performance judged on how hot they are. Putting on the night is just a tiny, tiny step in the right direction. In this case, discrimination to protect and encourage a minority group is the right thing. It's actually a way to join forces and get more women into the scene. It's going to integrate people in the long run. It's short-sighted to complain about this kind of positive group reinforcement. If you really cared about equality, you'd be trying to help minorities.

Now THAT is a great post, I appreciate it. Definitely agreed with the bolded, never thought the italicized even for a second. Your last paragraph makes a lot of sense and drives home that it's about leveraging the disadvantaged.

Part of my opinion (and what I said to MC in a PM) is that I've often heard people saying things like "she's good for a girl" or "she's smart for a chick" etc. Part of my reasoning (right or wrong) was that by highlighting that these artists are female, some people might just say "oh she's a good dj/producer.... for a woman", it's the unfortunate avenue that misogynists take. That's why I was trying to advocate that these artists should be praised only for their abilities... I hope I'm making sense, though I might be wrong/misguided.

Whew. Thanks for listening.

People are going to say that "for a woman" bit about women in male fields - I agree. Those people are jerks, or ignorant at best. I don't see how putting on an event like this is going to encourage or discourage that.

And MC, I didn't mean to say your event was a tiny step. It's a great step, and I hope it's wildly successful. Thanks for putting yourself on the line here.
