EDM C2 - Bonervan Review (that isn't really a review)

MUMS - Flying over swathes of widely entrenched aggro synth landscape with an 808thean rising cloudbed.

Deep Mum - Club perc tuffness. Much riddim.

AJ1 - Monster fart action, legitimate case for an angry Syro B-side (note: not claiming this to be an Afunx trak whatsoever)

TBS1 - Phat heavy bassline. Main synth driving into perfectly curated distortion.

Sister Ruth III - Pacey, detroit feels.

Watching Mum - Lotsa French vocal samples/wonked singing.

Big Bah - Tribal drums are interesting... suddenly made me think about The Pop Group (band). starts doing a Vibert, almost Kerrier District... a curious track indeed.

Stupid FC - Machine funk! Grooves so smooth that they can't be improved. Big Lush.

Solid Curve - Moody ambient piece with minimal click track. Sits deep in the underground Casio chamber.

Prambanan - Bells and metallics, very stark. Wouldn't be out of place on the AKIRA soundtrack.

Porch Road - Far removed from 'Fre Que Ncy' on EDM A2, this Numerology Songs track sounds amazing in spite of the feeble quality youtube version we've had to endure. Probably my top track on the CD, honest to goodness chills down the spine.

G.W-C - Militarywave? Highly unexpected, like something out of an old war film. Sounds gorgeous, very well produced.

I'm willing to bet that more money is made through digital releases. No manufacturing costs, no shipping. Don't forget that the companies that press vinyl and produce cassette tapes are for profit and charge up front.

Probably.

I was just teasing/joking lol

Nah, you're a wee child who can't wait for official release. Embarrassing. Shove your privilege.

I hope they release the 'Thanks' tracks on Bandcamp too. They could charge £5 or something. That way everyone's a winner.

Keeps the costs down too, if it was some spot varnish, hand folded, embossed sleeve with gold leaf we'd have paid a few quid more.

"Thanks for not supporting my physical copies and waiting for it to come out in a digital format where I get charged a percentage of the revenue that would otherwise go to feeding me and my family"

lol

85% of something > 100% of nothing Stephen! I'm just a bit miffed cos I would have ordered the physicals if I knew about this, despite having no record player or tape player. I was advised it would be getting a band camp release, so decided to wait. Not having these tracks will play havoc with my brain dance-related ocd!

So there wasn't a dl code? Hmmmm, I guess I have to rely on some youtube rip service if the tracks ever find their way there. Maybe it would be morally righter to buy them when/if they get to bandcamp, but y'know; moral these days...Thanks! was a very cool surprise. Have been jamming it all day. If the bonus is that good how good will the real thing be? It sure looks great!

Hopefully they reserved some copies in case of lost/broken parcels. Never had any packages lost (knocks the wood bang bang) but this is so limited that with my luck I'm a little bit worried. Can't do more than squeeze my balls and wait for the postman to arrive.

Just sat down and ripped these in the dark. fucking impressive music, cheers jk & gwc for putting this shit together.

For those who havent got theirs yet, EDM C2 is most like the first two, virtual compilations with lots of different stuff, some weird, not much coherence between trax (or even between aliases!) although the Your Mum trax seem to exhibit a bit of a footwork/trap influence. Porch is lovely.

EDM D4 seems to be credited solely to J.K. and is mostly post-Tuss (Syroian?) evil funky acid with hyper-edited breaks. lots of excoriating acid lines, 808s and floaty detuned analogue leads and basses. I recognise some stuff from the Penryn Space Agency broadcast. Some of it sounds like the Rob Kidley drill stuff. Prob my favorite of the 3.. Also is 'Ivinghoe Beacon' a Rushup Edge reference?

EDM E3 is a revelation! Its a moody OST to what sounds like a 70's horror movie. Lots of beautiful/ominous ambient tracks, with a kind of Ghost Box/early BoC vibe. Lots of flutes and monosynths, samples of birdsong, female vox, acoustic guitar. Brings to mind the Heidi Lord album but warmer and less cerebral.

On his deathbed, Aphex Twin finally opens up.

"The EDM compilations were an interesting social experiment where I was trying to mimic those artists who copy my sound. Basically, to the best of my abilities, I wanted to sound like someone sounding like Aphex Twin. With The Tuss, I only had one identity to hide behind so some of my fans immediately recognized me, but with the EDM compilations, I had the idea of hiding behind multiple names so that it would be impossible to know who was me and who wasn't. I went as far as making complete songs out of sampling my own songs haha! I wanted to see if my hardcore fans would make the difference between me, a copycat and me being a copycat of my own sound. Weirdly enough, it worked!"

I think even RDJ doesn't have enough hubris to say something like 'I had the idea', since several people including Genesis P-Orridge have done fake compilations with a similar concept
