Either listening to the live recordings, revisiting old releases, then when Syro came out, obviously wearing that out big time. So the LP came in yesterday and she is like "I'm listening to this, I've never seen you this way." I was actually weirdly nervous. So to make a long story short she listened to XMas Eve and LOVED it. And even the Circlon stuff which I basically warned her about, she would listen to it and just keep laughing.. and said it was really fun and entertaining. And with Aisatsana she got a little teary.. especially after I told her he made it for his wife. Now this morning she texted me saying "ahhh I just want to listen to more aphex twin, I can't get it out of my head, I see why you love it."

 

I guess part of the reason I'm sharing this is I thought it was pretty amazing this album has the ability to attract someone not into electonic music whatsoever. Its sort of a testament to how truly good Aphex is, despite it being "weird". No wonder so many of us got so damn into it back in the day. It is powerful music actually. This is his "fun light album" but if its the first time you have ever heard anything like this, it can open you up to this "world" just like RDJ album did for many of us or SAW1 did for the real old timers <- ;)

Same happened with my girlfriend. Played it to her last Saturday and she liked nearly all of it.

Theory - Richard's next album will be a brainmelting fuckfest due to the increase in interest from the mainstream.

Fresh is such a subjective term when it comes to anything except food or time since death (and even then only depending on the perceiver's sense of taste or smell). I would consider this music fresh, then again that is my opinion.

I am happy opinions are divided on this album: if people didn't dislike it then whom would I feel more superior then? Hmm?

Reviews only really ever indicate the ability of the writer to convey his own opinions (whether blinkered, well informed or blinded by rage/love/hate) about the subject under review. Reviews would be better served with a simple "yes" or "no". They'd be just as useful in the end and would leave more paper/data for the rest of us to fill with pointless bile/bilge.

Why are you even reading this? My opinion doesn't matter to anyone. By the way, I love this album and have been thoroughly amused by the rants of others on this subject. Thanks.

combining the current joyrex riddle with the recent "hat music" status update clues, i predict a hat tour. probably a relatively limited tour featuring the computer controlled instruments. would be awesome

So what's up with hat music? Syro's out, I've been gone a couple of days and Joyrex is ALREADY teasing new stuff?

Well I think it's fantastic.

I agree that it feels a bit underwhelming and that the tracks lack some sort of progression or even structure, but this last part I see as something commendable, I think it's commendable that the tracks are cohesive despite not having sections, this was also a theme in rushup edge: constant flow.

Needless to say that the production and attention to detail is impressive, having so many shit happening without ever feeling overwhelming.

I also feel like it's a mix of tributes to a lot of genres and styles, it has everything from jungle to 303 acid bass to hippie bongo drums to 4 to the floor to break beat to ambient. And while it feels like aphex is not 'showing off' he's doing his take on a lot of diverse styles, even his own, and saying I can do it too and this is how I can do it.

I am obviously exite. but if it's not music, I'm not sure how excite I can be. but if JR mind blown, then I'm listening...

RDJ: I've been doing loads of electro-mechanical stuff with drum robots and things like that. I've got four MIDI pipe organs and a Disklavier controlled piano and computer-controlled percussion. I've done loads of stuff with those, and none of that's on [syro], that's all for other projects. That other material is maybe even better than—well, I prefer it to this album, but I don't think it's as accessible. But it's more unique. Maybe these [syro] tracks are more pleasurable to listen to, but it's not that new for me. Maybe just the composition's changed, but there's no next-level beats on there. I've kept it like that on purpose. All the other stuff, which is kind of uncategorizable, is waiting to be fitted into another folder somewhere.

-watmm needs a new server

- rdj wouldnt be arsed managing his own bandcamp

- papa has experience setting up bandcamp and managing that shit

Wouldnt it be possible that papa bear is working to set up an alternative bandcamp on the watmm servers where rdj might be able to release some old archives shit. Wouldnt be surprised if Grant was involved himself as well.

Whats an interesting idea is that watmm already has some sort of income based on memberships. Classic recordlabels, or bandcamp miss that part of the economic equation. So this type of economic model might be interesting. Even if it's possible for non members to buy the music as well...

Ok, this is just a silly idea..

I love all this action at once happening lately. I wonder what Joyrex is talking about. Well he said it isn't MFM or anything music related (as in an Aphex Twin release), it isn't an AMA... so I don't see many options left.

My take is: Rephlex resurrection with kickstarter sort of thing/brand new label with Grant, Richard and Joyrex finally conquering the world with top quality braindance.
