i cant get into it. i paid the two bucks to listen to it in highest quality available, arranged pefect listening scenario (well, im just alone in a room, but you know) and i just cant get into it. iit sounds like rot13. or one of other afx-inspired acts. i mean it's not a problem per se that afx got one-upped by his successors/imitators, and im sure theres lots of gems on the release. but as far as first new song released as aphex twin since 2005 goes - i am being let down, big time.

it makes me said :(

i think im going to avoid any leaks. first reviews/track-by-tracks are not that flattering, and i think i'll just wait for the vinyl and even if its not up to standard at least ill have some fun. listening to vinyl is pretty fun.

I sort of agree and it makes me said also :(

It's probably just because of those goddamned Tuss copycats. Cause now he sounds like one of 'em

oh the ironing

lol

Sounds like a poor man's Tuss

I'm pretty dissapointed tbh

But whatever, most albums have a couple of "meh" tracks. This is probably one of them.

This one has a Mehtz track

Its interesting someone mentioned earlier finding the bass was turned up too much, as a mostly techno fan, i find this, as with pretty much all idm has a pretty small amount of bass. its tight and clean, its not bassy.

It put my subs down to 22hz which is pretty low and it shook the shit out of my house at -50db

do you even bass brah?

It was me that said it was bassy (and awepittance).

Never said the bass was sloppy, just that it was lots and loud. Pretty tight.

This is exactly what happened with Reach for the dead. Crackpot diehards went gaga, diehard nostaligiadudes were dissappointed and alot of people were "meh". Turns out it's one of the strongest tracks on the album. Whether that means that the quality of the whole album was low or expectations were way too high, I don't know.

This is the trouble with releasing music in todays climate. People are too greedy and companies drip feed snippets too much. It waters down the whole album experience. If you're going to release a teaser then why not the one earmarked for "Japan bonus track". That way the album is intact and people can judge for themselves what tracks are strongest or not.

yeah you're right that their early sound is what grabbed attention. I personally prefer the "less produced" sounds and timbre's from artists early material. However I still count them as being produced. With Electronic music, I feel that the process is more akin to production than songwriting so RDJ's early stuff was totally produced whether it be thrown together or meticulously edited.

Production is deeper than the final mix and mastering I think.

Indeed. Let's look at [Cliffs] for instance, even though it's a little later, as ambient music in particular is very production centric. The starting timbres, filtering, delays and reverb are all top-notch, and an integral part of the music in a way that simply can't be the case for genres featuring instruments with limited timbral variety. In this sense, his production is topnotch. But on the other hand, it has audible unpleasant clipping, and I think he's improved a lot since back then in that regard. When it comes to that kind of music, the expert knob twiddling is totally a part of the music itself, I'll grant you, and that's where such artists really shine.

And with tracks like On, the delays really blur the line between whether the echoes of a note count as notes in their own right in the listener's mind, therefore counting as part of the composition itself, but again, that's words somewhat getting in the way of what we're trying to talk about, which to a large extent lies between any attempt to rigidly define boundaries. :)

I totally agree with this sentiment.

There are people on WATMM who have been saying things to the effect of wanting the album to come out sooner, etc. The announcement was made so that there was a little over a month to wait for the album to release properly. As others have said, it's a drop in the bucket compared to the many years a lot of people have waited for a new Aphex Twin release.

We as listeners have, by and large, become impatient. The only way for a record label to resolve it is to make the announcement as soon as they're ready to actually unleash a release upon the public. I think My Bloody Valentine did that with the last album, and I believe that the way it was released (no pre-announcement, just "hey guys, here it is") was received pretty well. Of course, with anticipated stuff, it becomes more and more difficult to control the flow of information. Warp would probably have had to hire assassins to keep this quiet. And I'm honestly surprised that this hasn't already leaked in its entirety already.

Anyway, I'm rambling.

What I meant to say is that I agree with the sentiment that releasing an album in drips like this is perhaps not a good idea.

As for the stats that it is producing (from the YouTube views and so on), that aspect is quite interesting. autism intensifies and all that.

Compared to boc's marathon PR strategy, this release hype is pretty modest. And more mainstream acts have been releasing singles ahead of the album for years. This is no different other than the means of distribution.

Now the reviews and interviews will start coming out. It doesn't ruin the album release unless you let it. Don't listen to the track ten million times and it won't be ruined for you.

Loved it, every last bit of it. I freaked when I read the comments under the youtube clip that the track was available for download. I took nearly an hour for Bleep to take my money and every attempt at my usual lurk on this forum failed. Big lol at the Drive pic above, and thanks in general to everyone who contributes for keeping lurkers like me informed.

the beats and the sounds used for them are just lovely, the vocals at the end are a delight, i imagine someone could sample the beat and make a great hip-hop track out of it
