Yeah, I'm having to bite my tongue pretty hard with some of these comments. 227 tracks uploaded for free. Strong hints that he's not done uploading yet (and even if he was that's a shitload of great music anyway). The suggestion that he might go back and re-encode people's favourites and master them himself. More official stuff on Warp incoming... and people are somehow acting like they know better than Richard does what he should do with his own music? Insane

It's pretty hard to pick tracks as it often took years to get into some of the tunes. By voting them only the most accessible ones will make it but that's not what afx is about

He clearly stated that he will not follow the suggestions for a 100% but will pick some of the tracks himself, so I'm pretty sure it would be a nice compilation.

What about remastered tracks available for download as flac/wav?

Otoh I would just as soon be crack on with the uploading.

Shout outs to the saracens, musulmen and celestials.

In my opinion people who are into making the poll and a compilatio cd are missing out on how beautiful the SC dump is because you are still attach to this idea of some plastic junk being woth something, i mean people are talking about like "i need this physical CD in my house" in the mean time theres 200+ to enjoy and manipulate playlist however you want, its an amazing and beautiful thing, dont ruin it.

I dont know why this is so important, all that this will accomplished is another 250 pages of idiots saying why X track wasnt in there, is this what you want.

Im convinced that some people arent fans of the music, that are fans of being fans of something, and all this bullshit is just fandome diatribe

yeah why is this so important? all i can see is your non-stop complaining about people who want to hear rdj's music. what are you doing here anyway?

fair points but who is ruining it? it was the man himself who responded to fans' suggestions of releasing some of this in physical form. why not let everyone have their cake and eat it, too?

I have no need for physical media, that shit is an anachronism to me. The point isn't to have a physical object with some artwork, it's to have some of the best tracks properly mastered and lovingly tweaked by the man himself (plus a bonus track or two he said he wouldn't stick on the soundcloud). If he'd rather not do it and instead concentrate on the occasional new upload and making new tracks I'm not going to complain, but it seems equally silly to complain if he does want to put out a properly mastered release. I get the impression from his recent interviews he always wanted to put out a box set or at least the best of some of his unreleased tracks, he was just never able to choose between all the tracks - this poll idea should get around that.

Fair point !

He's an adult, he can make up his own mind as to whether or not he wants to master it. Just because I want it, if he doesn't care to, then big deal.

i hope xf cunningly builds a poll where tracks get automatically added to some secret RDJ bandcamp, entirely mastered and whatnot.

(same for the mu-ziq sc btw!)

:ok:

please wake me up when the polling site is up and running

I don't even know how any of whats going on be taken in a negative light. Fuck loads of Aphex music at our disposal as it is. Plus a release of a polled 'best of' fully mastered. This is all a dream come true.. ( oh and a medium to talk directly to Rich, in which he is actually responding and reading tons). This is all fucking amazing and fun.

Exactly, its all amazing and I'm sure he's not worried about the logistics of this project as it develops

After this many years he must know his fans are rabid and he can't satisfy every suggestion they make :)

At this point on Soundcloud he's probably been asked for downloads in the comments at least 300 times!

He might be resisting downloads to avoid unmastered rough tracks being considered as finished products, so he might really enjoy having some chosen by fans that he can bring to their full potential and show how it's done, with all the skills and recording equipment at his disposal now :) Then when they're released in whatever format, he can be satisfied with the production and not thinking he could have boosted this or eq'd that or fixed the drums or slowed it down, etc

We all know how detailed he is about sound, but he's made no apologies about streaming at 128 and hasn't even really addressed downloading at all despite the constant comments; he must know what they sound like at 128, so for his purposes on unrefined tracks 128 might be more than enough-- "Lifetrax" was basically a more mastered version of "last clissold maybe", and to me sounds better streaming at 128 than the raw last clissold sounds at 320

it's about sound waves vibrating through the air and into my ears. if other people get off on fetishising physical objects good for them. the medium is irrelevant to me though.

I got introduced to him at a house party which was playing a shitty tape copy of SAW. Worked for me.

Fuck YES

thats why people hire mastering engineers to do it. You guys act as if he'd be undertaking this proposed project all by himself (which is an odd thing to think)

My 2 pence - A handful of these tracks i've had as low bitrate mp3s, ripped from youtube, from live hanycam videos from 93.
Direct mp3s (even in 128kbps) from the DATs, from the man himself is an absolute blessing.
Of course, many others may never had seen the light of day. So i'm SOSOSO fuckin chuffed at the Soundcloud.

If Rich WANTS to make a mastered 'best of', so be it, and i'll be over the moon and buy it. If not, i'm still over the moon!!!

I just don't think people should be pushing him for a best of. One big problem is that a 'best of' these tracks will never be perfect for all fans. There are too many styles on display here. So you'll not get a consistent album at all. Inwhich case, it's probably better to put together your own playlist, even burn one to a disc etc...
You could make a handful of different style 'best of's - one for ambient, one for aggressive, one for SAW era, etc... like he's tried to do in the soundcloud playlists.
To me, these playlists just showed that even breaking them sown into types of tracks, you still end up with a lot of playlists, with a lot of tracks in each.
It's just not practical.

To me, the only real answer is - let Richard decide if he wants to make a release, let him decide on his favorites. Then we know it's a pure expression of tracks he maybe would have wanted to release, but never did.
then again, he could probably make one for each style/year, etc.
It's a mess. So maybe it's best to just enjoy the Soundcloud as it comes, and listen to it all (in it's entirety or as 'dumps') / or just our favorites (in our own playlists).

I'm all for physical fetishism. I buy up everything i can and have it all on display. (I'd love a Merzbox style thing with Everything in it!!!) But i just don't think it's necessary here.

(Also - It seems it's not over yet, so i also think it's too soon to talk of 'best ofs'.)

One final thought - I have all the Analord 12"s, and ripped some mp3s (not perfectly) - and i also have Chosen Lords. If i'm in the mood for some Analord - I Play the whole set through, and make a day of it - very rarely just the Best Of.
If i extrapolate this idea to the soundcloud - If i felt for it, i could have AFX, EVERYDAY!!! Glorious hehe ;)

Yes it's about sound carried by waves

Plastic and video and cardboard is fine but not essential for music that can stand on its own

been chatting with afx on sc about this - relevant bits of what he said regarding voting/a release. that said, i'm fairly convinced he at least lurks here (he hasn't said that but given WATMM's involvement with the caustic window release et al, I'd say it's a safe bet, so hi rich :)

and yes, i am already implementing this how he suggested (except more like ~top ~20 or so tracks, voting can be changed/updated at any time and it updates as tracks are uploaded, and i'll leave it up for a long time... fingers crossed we're seeing many more tracks!).

will get back to coding :)

hi , thanks, nice1

you think those SC stats are representative though?

People also chnge their mind about what they like I think.

I was thinking something like you have 5 votes or something and you can change those 5 votes when you like.

I dont know how many pieces of vinyl ill release yet of it.

Its quite a lot of work becuase Ill have to re-encode everything as all the files ive got that were uploaded to SC can be done a lot better +mastered by myself and with some help, IF the DAT's /cassettes still work!

It will give me a good basis for compiling something, i wont compile it exactly as people have voted, just use it as strong start to compiling it myself .

these stas are kinda useful for me but main problem is people go off tracks, change their mind etc, I know I do.

So I think a dynamic one would be best, whereby you could change your votes.

I also know people would be biased by looking at the stats so not sure the usefullness of it tbh

Would do cd as well

Would just be very useful for me, [i had my friends help me decide in the past now it's loads of fan's, ace!]

as a basis of where to start and also probably put some other unreleased ones that I didnt put on SC also

Maybe I can credit all the people who help by voting in the artwork :)

ALso I intend to leave any polls that may be created up for as long as possible to allow people to digest but no harm in starting now if its dynamic.
