To keep it real and analog, I'm gonna start posting to WATMM by writing my posts in fountain pen on hemp paper, putting them in bottles, and throwing them into the ocean.

are we there yet,

voyager 1, the fastest and farthest of the interplanetary space probes currently leaving the Solar System, will reach the Oort cloud in about 300 years and would take about 30,000 years to pass through it.

Has only just landed for work that it's already taking pictures of himself on the beach with sunshades.

Perspective_view_of_Korolev_crater_node_

This image shows what appears to be a large patch of fresh, untrodden snow – a dream for any lover of the holiday season. However, it’s a little too distant for a last-minute winter getaway: this feature, known as Korolev crater, is found on Mars, and is shown here in beautiful detail as seen by Mars Express.

Now we can affirm why Elon Musk is so hurry to go there: he wants his presents.

cool thread on the discovery of ultima thule

and this was a great thread, touches on the day-to-day parts of the work as well as the big moments. wasn't aware of this mission's current goals either, looking forward to seeing what they see :)

the photos that new horizons got of pluto and charon were some of the most stunning space photos i've seen. the closest approach to ultima thule will be 3,500 km. the closest approach to pluto was 12,500 km. so, we may get really good, close-up shots of a gnarly kuiper belt object. hopefully it goes well.

great example of how removing humans from the craft allows the mission more potential

ultima thule photos starting to come on.

hopefully we get some better shots once the data is back

edit: lol "The New Horizons team will have to wait 20 months for all of the spacecraft’s data and images to return to Earth" nyt
