The Soundcloud dump takes the spotlight off this EP quite a bit, but going back to this EP after listening to all these tracks really shows the achievement of this EP and how coherent his musical project / career is.

yeah i really like the ep, really well produced acoustic stuff, quite moody & weird, and there are not so many producers/composers making prepared pianos tunes anymore.

i fink nobody cares about syro or this lel now

Just listened Syro this afternoon between all the SC madness, and it was really, really good. Made it sound even more fresh after all those gritty dirty old 128kpbs tracks :) same with the EP!

I was going to say "everybody's completely forgotten about CCAI".

I'm going to listen to syro soon though. As great as the tracks in the sc dump are, I can say I still like syro better. It's so fucking good.

Apologies if this has been posted before, just noticed these comments on SC

  • @richarddjames: For example the 2 big solenoids I usually use for the two kick drums have latency that ranges from something like 10ms to 25ms, depending on how much force your sending them, so you can’t easily just program them from a normal sequencer without a lot of manual adjustment, same as a disklavier piano but im learning. The first time i used the big solenoid mechanism that I made myself it punched a hole right through the kick drum skin!

  • @richarddjames: There are all kinds of problems to overcome though that you would not think of until you try, its not as easy as just sending MIDI to a piece of hardware or a pluggy. And I have no help in setting them up , I do it by myself , the biggest learning curve has been the mechanics and how to clamp things extremely accurately, as even a 1mm difference between beater and drum will drastically change the dynamics. All the beaters have to be calibrated by special custom software and they constantly change behaviour with temperature. All the timing between the different solenoids is very different and has to be adjusted manually when programming them.

  • @florianhertz: not exactly but like this idea, nice, thanks. I could use analog programmable audio router matrixes to do the same thing, been using a few different ones recently. A bit like when you have multiple cameras all around something eh?, to get that 360 degree effect. There are many things you can do with these mechanisms that I’m exploring each time i get the time to, which seems like the hardest parameter to control! One of my faves I’ve discovered so far which I've used on this new ep a bit is multi tracking the exact same performance. When setup properly [not easy] these mechanisms almost play the same thing twice, they are very accurate but not 100% and that tiny margin of error makes all kinds of interesting things happen. But even things like when you hit a drum twice, the tuning is subtley changing each time, so you get real flanging! This is impossible with a 100% human and you can create some really interesting effects :)

Ok, for the haters on CCAI2... get the vinyl and play it at 45RPM. The album is over fast, but it sounds more like the glitchy RDJ stuff people like.

I like it. I'm happy there is new Aphex, it's making me more excited to create tunes personally

Those drums and cymbals are so crispy, I'd love to spend a few days just recording drum patterns on his midi-kits - being a decent player on kit, some of the ideas I have for using a robot to do my bidding is pretty boner-hardening.

Have to take my words back since finally listening to this in full made me realize that it might not be such a good idea to mix this with Syro tracks. Completely different game. Or then I've got so used to the Syro tracklist that I don't want to add anything there. Thought first that Syro+CCAI2 could go nicely together, making it Drukqs II or something....

Overall I'm really digging CCAI2. IMO it was great that Syro got released first and after that we got more of this experimantal HAT stuff. Current favorites are all the old already heard favorites ergo Diskhat tracks. Yeah the EP is short but I'm listening to it again and again and again....It's BW's Good Programs situation again.

imo it's cool that this exists, I listen to it ..and Syro, I really, really like that, too. But wait, the SC dump is also very cool. etc. et al

but wait, some of these are different than the others. Why did he, Richard, make these into separate releases? Is there a master track list? Must I make comparisons? and other inanities. My thoughts, FWIW

I much prefer CCAI to Syro. Syro is good but it sounds like he is giving the world what he thinks THEY want (more accessible stuff) whereas CCAI is more liek what HE wants to put out. Could do with more like this - I see at as more in line with 50s-60s Musique Concrete type stuff than modern electronica, though the modern sprinklings sound good amid the clanking acoustics. Also I'd say Syro maybe sounds a bit overworked and clever wheras this sounds more like natural progression.

I've listened to syro hundreds and hundreds of times since release, and I thought I would do the same with this EP, but I don't think I've listened it to at all since the soundcloud madness. Just too much warm nostalgia to those tracks.

it's like, why not be glad all three offerings exist?

you've got the somewhat monochrome palette of CCAI, immaculately recorded and arranged, and then a smorgasbord of hot and cold meats, salads, hors d'oeuvres etc. with Syro.. like, you're gonna tire of eating the same dish eventually, why not alternate it with other things. Why does it have to be one thing instead of the other.

hey, were glad we got all of em! and i listen to all of them.

but it doesnt change the fact that you can like salad better than meat

were humans

piano un10 it happened, DISKPREPT4 and diskhat ALL prepared1mixed 13 are all damn good songs. I'm really excited about how he's going to incorporate these robotic critters in future releases if he does so at all.

hat5c 0001 rec-4 is my favorite overall. It's just such a surreal sounding exit from the EP.

But yeah, after being inundated with 110 tracks from the gawd this has really kind of taken a backseat at the moment. These certainly are glorious times we're living in ladies and gentlemen.

huh, walked into my work's kitchen to hear diskhat1 on BBC Radio 6.

Stoked to watch OA II. The movement thing never bothered me, anyone familiar with Druidic studies will recognize the importance of movement to get to higher planes.

Have completely forgotten about this release since all the SC nonsense, and now I don't think im even going to bother buying it.

You have so many soundclouds richard!
