Aphex Twin: Computer Controlled Acoustic Instruments pt2 EP

Recommended Posts

I've listened to this quite a bit in between getting lost in the Soundcloud dump. Still surprised by how much I like it, was expecting something artsy or avant-garde but it's really just a bunch of funky robot grooves and lovely solo piano pieces, isn't it?

This is the exact amount of afx I want lol. OVERLOAD.

it almost feels like when i first got into afx. like there was too much to go thru... it was overwhelming. also some of the sounds on the sc dump sound like the rdj i was listening to at the time so it all takes me back.

This is EXACTLY what I wanted. Proper album, EP, Data Dump (i still feel like it isn't finished).

But yes this EP still gets plays form me. only recently fully appreciated the last track tho

That last one is the slow grow. I enjoy it a little more each time out.

I actually haven't heard any of this yet other than the first track lol.

My session plans a few weeks ago fell through. =/

Have to hold out until feb 14 to hear it.

hell yes ^^ this exactly what aphex wants, to cut these tracks up and rearrange their parts and overlay them in a myriad of directions, i assume the next "new shit" is something in this vein... :braindance:

This EP is pretty much polar opposite to Syro.

Everything on Syro seems polished/tight/calculated, and there is an unreal amount of progression + shapeshifting on those tracks.

CCAI seems organic, laidback, imperfect and sloppy (using those adjectives in the nicest possible way). More of a jam going on with this one.

Plus Syro is all happy and upbeat, whereas CCAI is dark as fuck. The artwork does a very nice job of conveying that too!

Both super lush releases. I definitely need to be in different moods to tackle each one though

Yeah, I don't get any nefarious vibes from it either. I will say, however, that the opening and closing track both sound mischievous. At worst it could probably provide a good soundtrack for an elaborate jewel heist or something. Nothing evil. The rest of it is definitely playful barring the melancholy piano un10 it happened and DISKPREPT1.

Not sure if this was posted, but Fantano did a mini-review of CCAI last week.

i think many people and journalist take this ep very seriously, comparing it to his albums, "proper" eps and all...

it's just a fun little ep with hat jams, a souvenir. sonicyouth experiments.

perfect accompaniment and opposite of syro - made not for people, but mostly himself. short raw tracks, unpolished, showing new people how different richard can be comparing to syro, and that he doesnt give a fuck

warp you want stuff to put on january? ok, theres some tracks i made yesterday

i like all of it

yeah i love ep and listen to it more than syro

but i can't compare them. or compare this ep to any other ep. it's just so different.

when people/journalists compaire it to something, ye olde afex, or especially syro, they miss the point. like "oh, wheres fast beats, great tunes and innovations?" and because lack of that, they think that ep kinda stinks. But they still respect it, cause it's afex. if it wasnt aphex they probably would never put a needle on it again.

so enjoy it as it is and dont take it very seriously

*oh by "yesterday" i mean that tracks were made much faster than syro tracks. definitely didnt take months and years to finish. some of them are quick scetches, and that gives them special raw charm, that i like (opposed to overpolished syro). he probably gave warp a whole bunch of them, not caring enough about album structure, order and all that. but it's just my thoughts ofc.

Agreed that it's charm is in the rawness compared to Syro but I think a considerable amount of time and effort has gone into this. Setting up the circuitry and mechanics must have been very time-consuming and fidddlesome (see the official AT soundcloud comments I posted earlier). I am very much hoping for more (Part 1?) soon.
