Danny DeVito was the first choice for Motoko Kusanagi, if it makes y'all feel any better about the film.

What's the thing with Asian actress? Motoko doesn't look asian in the anime version, i mean her most striking aspect is arguably the psychotic eyes, wide as alien's.

I personally would be disappointed with asian lead actress, in fact (not that i look forward to seeing the film anyway).

yeah it's seems likely it would have sold fewer tickets with an unknown asian lead. some chick who is not ScarJo

Yeah to what? I'm talking about how asian actress is not fitting Motoko image (made by Japanese) at all. It should be asian coz why? Passport? It's a remake of anime version, not an interpretation of text.

i'm saying, yeah, that what you're saying is one of several rational explanations for not casting an asian actress but that the most pressing one to producers is that you (theoretically) will draw more ticket sales with a known hottie like scarjo. it seems obvious that the "scandal" around the casting was just to ignite flame wars in comments and get clicks on shitty gossip sites.

just got back from seeing it

^ Was it that bad?

A month ago I insisted on watching it opening night...but I still haven't seen it.

The whole "whitewash" controversy isn't a deal breaker for me (even after having lived in Japan)...but I heard for a dystopian sci-fi setting the atmosphere is too polished. I'm curious how Kitano's performance went tho. Last film I saw him in was the Yakuza flick Outrage (2010). Wouldn't mind seeing ScarJo in that skin-tight custom suit either.

you have to watch those silent people, always trying to trick you with their silence

The writing and acting is really hammy, the plot is horrible sci-fi schlock, the shot-for-shot scenes taken from the original movie are just horrendous. Any of the original atmosphere and chin-stroking is dissolved (but we saw that coming). The city is certainly too clean and fancy looking really, but I don't mind, feast for the eyes and all that. I thought the action scenes were pretty good too. Kitano looked like he had just been woken up from a nap to read his lines in every scene (I've never seen him before so I don't know what his usual acting style is like).

Thought the shot-for-shot scenes were actually well done. Kitano was great, as he always is.

Interesting sidebar - his Outrage films are supposed to be completed this year.

I'm not overly familiar with the anime, so I guess as an unbiased review the movie was alright... Nothing exceptional, but it wasn't terrible either. The visuals were pretty cool, and it had some good action scenes... The story did seem a little messy though. Overall i'd give it 7/10.

I will say, it definitely at least made me curious to watch the animes, so I guess it has that going for it at least... However I don't think it lasted long enough in theatres to really draw enough people into the source material. I think it only lasted about a week or two at most at the theatre my little brother works at. Kind of a flop.

Finally saw it earlier this week. They totally missed the point of the original movie. There are some plot points that don't matter or make much sense as to why they're in the film (Batou's eyes...) and the ending was pretty goddamn dumb.

However, it definitely is something to look at. The practical effects for the geisha dolls was really cool and the set design was really good.

James Ferraro's track surreally fits the montage (it's Plastiglomerate & Co from Human Story 3, slightly edited)

I'm confused. I've only just heard James Ferraro's stuff now, Am I missing something? It sounds like a complete OPN ripoff. Or did OPN rip Ferraro?

The fact that you know 0pn and never heard of Ferraro makes you sort of a neophyte in terms of this genre (vapourwave etc), so i would stay back from ripping of assumptions, they're both not inventors.

This particular release by Ferraro is not characteristic of the general style though and i don't hear "complete" similarities to 0pn stuff aside from basic features. It reminds me more of American academic minimalism (made known by Glass, Reich, Riley) sucked into the vapour thing and its quirks.

Like, which 0pn track is closely similar to this one?

Eh... it's not the most exquisite phrasing i admit dat, but i don't get what you're getting at at all

As in, that quote will be the base material for memes.

Goddamn I thought this was extremely poor. It played like a disjointed mixtape of "badass" GITS stuff, with nothing at all for anyone unfamiliar with the source material to care about in it.

Worse than Robocop 2014 imo.
