I'm really impressed by the set of Izotope 3 restoration plugins, not just because how well they work for actual noise removal but also the bizarre ass effects they are capable of making

spectral morphing is one of the holy grails of dsp. i still need to find some vst capable of it.

specmonkyage is good for FFT/spectral stuff if you can find it (it's pretty old). I used it on a lot of tracks back in the day

cant find specmonkyage

whats that synth that was made in the 80s by a frenchman and it has loads of leds that you can touch to draw harmonics?

according to david morley (on a forum post) aphex twin owns one. the guy tried to make a new one a few years ago but they couldn't get enough money to back the project. that would be such a good kickstarter if we tracked down that guy. also there's a vst effect similar to the functionality of that synth. anyone know?

I believe you're looking for Iannis Xenakis' UPIC tool – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UPIC

If you want to show your friend some powerful and magnificent spectral work, have him listen to Martin Stig Andersen's Sleepdriver.
As far as I remember the source material is solely recordings of traffic.

But then again, most use of FFT processing end up with that certain characteristic sound if you don't try to disguise it through mixing and further processing. Not saying it should be hidden, but sometimes the sound is just daunting. Try it the Dronemaker part of the Norris' spectral set on the load-up settings and use a large fft size and it'll have that sound.

tbh i doubt it's a plug in, you can very easily achieve that time stretched glitched out effect by editing audio with a mouse.

most afx effects sound hand edited.

Also regarding CDP:

all sounds were derived from voice sample and drum loop using CDP front-end in Renoise

Distort repeat:

Not necessarily an effect, but this tool is great for checking mixes it seems. I'm terrible at mixing still but the presets alone on this VST are very convincing. I toyed around with using it as an effect on some tracks I muck around with, which is cool. Made a synth sound like it's playing in the room next door.
