Brisbot
I second the vst's Chim mentioned, they're very fun, though the buffer override is a bit overused. These days if I use it I try to hide it in the mix to compliment something else.Personally, I like to make DSP sounds from scratch, starting with a 'click' of some sort. The click almost always has a vowel formant sound to it initially such as 'ooo' or 'eee', which gives it definition. Pretty much this WHOLE song is me playing with DSP bits I made, plain, stretching them, making whistle sounds out of them, etc.https://soundcloud.com/evoava/modular-hash-demoStarting at :29 (and kinda throughout), those are clicks at the middle C fundamental/ OR the fundamental of the key note I'm wanting to compose in (for easy transposition), with various frequency shifters adding higher harmonics (all automated to be in tune, a bit time consuming, but worth it for me). I'll get a click of some sort, and add a tone to it with a dub-delay. I'd much rather find NATURAL clicks that are around C and pitch them a bit. But both methods produce different sounds. Make sure you have a plugin in there reading what note it's on since you can easily get something else besides C. Once you get C or very close, then you can record.I find it makes the 'dsp' FX very in your face, as opposed to filtering it out from existing stuff, i'm adding harmonics to a click. Then when I have all my samples I'll transpose and whatnot, using different samples as I go. So the difference between what I'm doing and what the usual method is that I'm adding harmonics by shifting them in another channel while keeping the original click intact.Once you put it to a track, then what I'm doing is adding many midi in a row of the samples, makes it sound like a screwed up acid line or something.Hope that made sense. It's not easy to make and requires many steps. So it'll never catch on. Maybe when I get enough knowledge I'll be able to make a VST or something to make it easier. :) Edited June 7, 2015 by Brisbot Thanks Haha Confused Sad Facepalm Burger Farnsworth Big Brain Like × Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/86564-dsp-that-makes-you-go-wow/page/2/#findComment-2285307 Share on other sites

It seems nice from YT videos but it looks like what can be done there can be done with VST chains. Would you argue against that? I try to use it when I want to make some really improvised/glitchy stuff, and that's, for me, the appeal of AM, its capacity to compose on the run, since it doesn't has a sequencer (only for automations). I agree that it is absolutely possible to make similar stuff in any daw or vst chain, but the "workflow" actually reflects in how it sounds at the end, imho. in Ableton Live for example you have a really nice and organized fx table ready to act. In AM it usually is a mess having boxes floating and stuff, but "feels" different. One of the biggest appeals of it for people are some of the built in effects, such as the granulator and similar stuff, and the "metasurface" is nice too (which is like a super x/y parameters control), but again, it all ends in the workflow, and I wouldn't consider AM as a "complete DAW", its more of a "live music software". tim hecker use it. Maybe the software version of what you're looking for is Audio-Term (immediate dl; https://www.youtube.com/redirect?q=http%3A%2F%2Fdl.dropbox.com%2Fs%2F1y0d88ts8zy1um7%2FAudio-Term.zip&redir_token=6wYWutRK4uTcjy5V8ZcTR8c8OJV8MTQyMzIxNTgwN0AxNDIzMTI5NDA3), this used to be called Transwave? You can for example create wavetables out of samples and do a whole bunch of manipulation https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R0Ysi9FLxQs I think if you have the right monitor + lightpen you can also draw/control the program like you could with the fairlight & upic system + there's things like frequency domain stuff like mammut to check out; http://www.notam02.no/web/2005/10/mammut-2/?lang=en Or Spear; http://www.klingbeil.com/spear/ Also worth checking out imo is; Photosounder - image-sound synthesizer; http://photosounder.com/ ( Coagula - an image synth ( https://www.abc.se/~re/Coagula/Coagula.html)) Image to sound can also be done with the free Audiopaint program (official site down, maybe this alternative works; http://audiopaint.software.informer.com/3.0/ ) besides sinewaves you can also load in your own .wavs as input. Can generate nice granular clouds with it. Add something like photoshop to the mix and you can shape your musical gestures visually (time is x-axis, frequency scale is y-axis, colors determine left and right panning mix). Made a couple of musique concrete pieces through this technique, processing fieldrecordings, making the collages in a wave editor; https://soundcloud.com/plugexpert/2-richard-jonas-ginderlaag https://soundcloud.com/plugexpert/4-richard-jonas-draai Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/86564-dsp-that-makes-you-go-wow/page/2/#findComment-2286440 Share on other sites
