E3 2015: The Thread

Recommended Posts

Just finished watching the MS, EA, and Ubi conferences.

Microsoft was okay. I guess I'm not really in the Xbox camp anymore so I mostly watched it for the multi-plats. The GeOW1 re-release is pretty lol and the new one, along with the new Halo, looks as I expected. Not necessarily a bad thing but I don't exactly feel like I'm missing out there. Dark Souls 3 could be cool I guess, but only if they fix the terrible camera and ancient feeling menus. Also, the positive reaction to the blatant milking of this franchise is hilarious. But eh... people will be people. I guess the whole thing would've been more fun if I had an Xbone.

EA did a surprisingly good job this year. I guess being able to skip past all the sports games made the difference here. Mirrors Edge 2 looks cool and it being open world sounds very nice. It also has some really pretty visuals. Star Wars Battlefront also looks much farther away from the Battlefield games than I anticipated which is a VERY good thing and the third person camera option is much appreciated. Still, if it remains multiplayer only, I'm not too sure I'll get it. Perhaps later on. New NFS looks fine and that Unraveled thing could be really sweet. Oh and MASS EFFECT <3 That alone makes the whole thing worth it.

Ubisoft nearly wins everything based on a new South Park game alone. Stick of Truth was amazing and the superhero theme is niiice. But please no European censorship this time. Also kind of relived that they keep apologizing for the disaster that was Unity's launch. You'd almost think there's a tiny chance they might've learned some kind of lesson there. ALSO, that viking game (Honor something?) looks cool because everything with vikings in it is cool and amazing. And there are not enough viking vidjas.

The Division looks excellent but PLEASE stop with the fake voice chat thing. It's just... ugh. Disappointed by the lack of an AC Syndicate demo, especially since that reveal thing had me hoping for newer and much more polished footage. Oh and Ghost Recon blew my mind.

I dunno... reading through this post, I pretty much seem to be excited about everything. Maybe I'm going insane or perhaps I'm just less of a cynical asshole than I was a few years ago. Very happy with my PS4 purchase so far and this E3 has only reinforced that feeling. So much good stuff coming out. Very nice <3 Looking forward to Square Enix later.

From the makers of Metroid Prime... This could be good.

Nothing is really wowing me yet. There are some cool concepts and trailers but there is next to no gameplay footage of anything.

Sony's conference for me was kinda meh:

  • Last Guardian - wow, moved to PS4. Nobody saw that coming. Looks nice, but I'm not sure it can stand up to the hype after all this time. Remember, this was announced in 2009. When (if) it finally comes out, it will be a 7 year old game - unless they've scrapped it and started over multiple times throughout the past 5 years (which is likely), it may be behind the curve when compared to games coming out in 2016 that had less of a gestation period.
  • Horizon - very interesting! Guerilla Games finally breaks away from the Killzone mould. Hopefully the story is better than what KZ3 and 4 offered...
  • No Man's Sky - still intrigued by this, and I LOVE the fact you can go from space all the way down to the planet and back again, which I really wanted in Destiny. However, for being procedurally-generated, I've seen a lot of yellows and oranges and reds. I hope that's not the primary colour palette of the game...
  • Shenmue 3 - never played the originals, but Yu Suzuki is a master game maker, so I have mad respect for him finally doing this. And, it reached it's Kickstarter goal in record time!
  • World of Final Fantasy - THIS looks interesting! Most excited I've been for a FF game since FF X back on the PS2.
  • Final Fantasy 7 Remake - Hmm. Dunno. Perhaps enough time has passed I'll want to replay it. For a nearly 20 year old game, I wonder if the story/mechanics will hold up.
  • Call of Duty III - boring as fuck. I wish this series would die.
  • Hitman - looks nice, never played the others. Not really my cup of tea.
  • Dreams - Ah, Media Molecule - you and Sony finally squeezed the life out of Little Big Planet, and now you're onto the next thing, which is the LBP concept in a different shell. Very telling they never showed HOW you "create anything you can imagine". We'll see.
  • Firewatch - very interesting! Almost get a Gravity Falls vibe from the artwork.
  • Uncharted 4 - More and more amazing each time I see it. Was truly impressed by the gameplay and visuals.

I was actually surprised more by what Sony DIDN'T show:

  • More VR stuff - probably for the best, as I still think this will end up being a gimmick, a la Kinect, Move, Oculus, etc. NOT the future of gaming. Microsoft's Hololens, while really, really impressive, I just don't see becoming a mainstream gaming device.
  • Dark Souls III/Bloodborne expansion - sure, Microsoft announced it first, but why not remind folks it's on PS4 too?
  • PS Vita stuff - poor Vita. With the Playstation TV selling really poorly as well, I bet the Vita is scrapped by the end of 2016.
  • Gran Turismo 7 - I guess they're not worried about Project Cars/Forza 6?
  • More ACTUAL exclusives - almost everything was "And you'll play it first on PS4*" - I guess the exclusives are not as lucrative as they used to be...
  • God of War PS4 - might have been best they rested this until next E3 since GoW III remastered is out soon...
  • More Indie stuff - apart from that obnoxious sizzle reel they showed for those four games, no mention of all the great Indie stuff coming.

Now, it's Nintendo's turn to impress...

Actually I remove my previous statement, this looks awesome.

I don't have an xbone or ps4 and don't have plans to get either any time soon so I'm waiting to see Nintendo's show.

Yeah Cuphead's art style is fantastic, I don't think I've ever seen the 30s cartoon aesthetic in a videogame. Hopefully the gameplay will hold up although I probably won't get to play it unless it makes it to PC.

Stoked to watch OA II. The movement thing never bothered me, anyone familiar with Druidic studies will recognize the importance of movement to get to higher planes.

Watched the Sony conference. That guy in the beginning sounded like he was panicking when he first entered the stage. At least he appeared to calm down shortly after. Had me worried for a sec.

I've never played one of these Team Ico vidjas so I have no idea what to expect of The Last Guardian but the sky-WOOF is really cute. Might buy it just to support something different. Looks very emotional with tears everywhere. Dinosaur hunter game also looks cool but I'm not sure I see the point in narrating everything you do when you're supposed to stay quiet and hidden. The thought of a new Hitman had me excited but then they mentioned that it'd be released digitally first and now I'm worried.

Besides from that Uncharted 4 looks fantastic, as expected, and No Man's Sky actually won me over again after quite a few lackluster/samey trailers.

They did good.

Am I watching the right Nintendo event? It's embarassingly sad in all regards so far. As the pic above demonstrates. That segment was full cringe.

edit: How do you fast forward through this shite?

This is good stuff for the Nintendo faithful; Star Fox 0, a Samurai Link, Metroid Blastball. They're embracing their Japanese culture, and finally coming to terms with being their own developer. Even though it's a stop gap year between consoles, a lot more of their resources seem to be put into software development. And Super Mario Maker will definitely make it to 3DS.

New Star Fox looks like a PS2 game.

I wonder how many years Nintendo can keep capitalizing on the nostalgia factor. It has completely faded for me.
