i didnt remember him saying that thing about dark music (not saying he didn't say it, i just forgot). imo people should just make music and not really think about what kind they're making, just let whatever they're feeling happen as it happens. if someone consciously goes into it like peter pan 'think happy thoughts think happy thoughts' then what comes out is going to be forced. besides, look at ae. they do tracks that seem neither blatantly 'happy' or blatantly 'sad' or 'angry'. there is more than just a 1d line between 'positive' 'happy' 'etc' and 'sad' 'angry' 'negative'. there's like a whole 3 dimensional space of emotions or ideas to work in. and besides, some of rich's best stuff is stuff i would personally consider on that 'dark' side. like death fuck, some of the more ominous sounding things on surfing, saw, and the hectic tracks on drukqs sometimes get on that ominous side of things. imo nothing tops an ominous bassline. ominous.

ominous? ominous.

I like some of the bits on orphaned dj selk (that 1:42 track mainly) but compared to the Tuss, it's pretty obvious to me that ODS is weak/sloppy and lacks inspiration.

Neotektu72 is a 5 minutes 5/4 static drum pattern with random reverb splashes. I like me some beats and recording textures and maybe it works on a dancefloor as a utility track (doubt it) but I don't get what's to admire or particularly enjoy on here.

Serge fenix rendered is the closest thing to a killer track on here, but those sloppy detuned chord stabs are just sloppy. It seems like if any other notes were to be played in those stabs, the musical effect would be the same. In the Syrobunkers interview, Richie was all like ''music makers shouldn't give in the dark side, we really need to express what's best and positive, awaken people with positive / trippy vibes'' but to my ears this track and the rest of this EP is just giving in to the shit vibe of this world.

I like that little midi pipe 2:26 track but it sounds a bit thin, and again, detuned pads / dark sad vibe.

And those track titles sucks, it was a nice novelty on Syro but now it just kills any sense of imagination or wonder, which is fitting since the tracks have little of those as well.

Damn this review is a downer.. I'm still keen to hear the seleks tho. I like to go deep on those dark/sad vibes ;)

"And those track titles sucks..."

Thanks jchgf

I think the Tuss stuff is without a doubt some of richards best stuff ever released.

Rushup Edge is so good. and gets better with age (like most great aphex releases) Goodbye Rute I think is one of his most under appreciated.

It certainly is. IMO, the best track is Rushup I Bank 12. In fact, it's one of my all time favs. Fucking amazing!!!

Says a lot about this EP when most of the discussion on these last couple of pages is about how good The Tuss is haha

is it just me or r8m neotek beat is another version of this ... (at least a cousin)

Depends on whether the people discussing Tuss have actually heard the leak. No?

that's a honest and hard review but i don't agree :cisfor:

sure happy, trippy afx is awesome but i absolutly have a boner for dark/evil afx, and its straight in your face here

that neotektu72 track is a beast, ithe strangulating negative vibe of current value with the beatings of autechre punches, gotta be played as loud as possible, top noth afx soundmurder

i love the ep, there is an afx gig in my house :cattears:

I'm hardly a closed minded nun. Remember, I'm on a fucking IDM forum.... an IDM forum.. Think about that for a second before claiming people are closed minded nuns.

the pads on simple slamming are very churchy , thinking of an old monk tuning the organ in an cathedral.

and i hear some hip hop beat style, lot of swing and groove, very precise on the dynamics "volume"

also love the mostly offbeat claps and percs sounds.

is it wrong considering this ep as somehow minimalistic ?

lol yeah. i haven't heard the ep (except for the scrirem first track aand the mary anne hobs track aaaand the bonus beats track that bleep accidentally* leaked (or not, according to some on the board).

WTF. I listen to the album fully, find out Bonus EMT Beats has the same damn melody as a track I'm currently working on. DAMMIT. :( Er, just the lead.

upon second listen the melody is a tiny bit different, but you have to examine it to find out. Like two notes are transposed slightly differently. :(((((((((((((((((((((((((((((

I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and just say he's kidding. The chord stabs are 1337. Yeah you haven't seen that one in 15 years.

The chords are so perfect

The final time they come back it's like finding water in the desert and that last little melody gives me goosebumps every time

It's a real lesson in less is more and worth waiting for
