Yeah or just lob off the extension and do a GET request for that, e.g. i.imgur.com/Lbquz.png -> i.imgur.com/Lbquz . Actually it looks like that redirects so do imgur.com/Lbquz . If that has a 404 response you know it doesn't exist.

 

Furthermore, you can pull the image's filename from the response if it's not a 404 so that if the image on that page isn't a PNG, you'll get the right extension. It looks like it's the child element of div.image.textbox .

Damnit, looks like imgur has been set up properly to block any external checksum checks, filesize checks, even header checks (i.e. testing for 404s). Looking at the api page you need to have your app (I guess in this case site) whitelisted to do this sort of thing...
