What the . . .

Yes, but her singing voice is huge.

@ Sagan - lol@ Lucy Twin Peaks - I like the cut of ur jib :-)

@Haste: "Heard you was down with the AK, Now I see you on the video with Michel'le? Lookin' light str8 Bozos" :-P All jokes aside, yeah, great singing voice. . . just totally expect to hear from autotune artifacts when she's talking but then realize it's for realzies and then brain assplodes

@ThatSpanishRadiohead guy - Yeah, they are streaing the entire thing tonight from . . . 6PM CST through 9 in advance of the album. I have 0 fucks of an idea of how to access it (it's through iTunes). . . I imagine u open up itunes and click on somethign or some shit. . . regardless, means that leaks will probably appear at, what 7:07 P.M.?

@everyone - Really, really short clip at the end of the video here (entire video i only 1 minute so you don't have to wait that long). Jesus Christ, haven't been more hyped off of a 15 second clip since . . . dunno, I already had Drukqs I think when the Rubber Johnny short clip came out . . . maybe Radiohead Blips? Anyway. SUPER HYPED.

a few things

1. Carlyle group owns part of Beats, here is the defense contractor CEO rapping about it wearing Beats

2. Dr Dre has always been and will always be one of the blandest /shittiest/most boring rappers who makes extremely excellent catchy rap productions

3. He beat the shit out of a female journalist who interviewed Ice Cube in the early 90s

( i hate Dr. Dre )

Its energetic, well produced, and features a lot of skillful lyricism.

I dig it.

Gotta give Dre some props for obviously giving a fuck about his craft.

Will take a few listens for sure.

Giving the leak a listen, doesn't immediately hit me the way 2001 did, but that may just be a nostalgia factor compared against the more modern stylings... I'm a bit behind on a lot of current mainstream rap trends also, I'm more into underground hip-hop these days, still like that old school boom-bap. Dre's still got that production touch though... it's definitely well produced.

It's apple exclusive?! Fuck that.

Some songs I made with my fingers and electronics. In the process of making some more. Hopefully.

how is it 3 hours long??

that's because it was streaming for 3hrs (from 6pm-9pm PT)

Hmm, coming back and finishing up my listen through of this album, I even have to retract part of my initial reaction...

What I mean is, this album's kind of a mess. It has parts that are well produced, but overall a lot of the tracks are too busy sounding for their own good and a lot of the verses and features don't really flow well together (why so much autotune now also?). A lot of the samples seem crammed into the tracks, and they end up feeling crowded. In addition many of the verses just have this "go HAM" mentality without much actual content to them, I get that that's what a lot of rap is and it's also kinda the concept of this album like riding hard through compton but it falls flat a lot.

The first half of the album is pretty meh. TBH, I'm not even a huge fan but... all the Kendrick features seem to be one of the highlights of the album. The second half of the album starts to pickup again with "Deep Water" and Snoop's feature on "One Shot One Kill" but then "Satisfaction" and "Animals" roll through and it gets pretty mediocre again. Eminem's verse on "Medicine Man" is another highlight.

Overall it's a pretty messy and mediocre album and it's little highlights here and there aren't enough to raise it to greatness. I'm gonna have to jump back to Chronic 2001 and see how that's aged.

@ghosty - I'm about halfway through at the moment. I will say, that I listened to the leak, then bought it (because Dre needs more $ and his headphones are real high quality . . . wait. . .. FUCK!!!). I will say that there is a noticeable (to my ears) difference in quality between the two. Some of the songs feel less crowded/smushed - then again, this is really my first listen through.

To me, it's a little too early to make a call. There are several tracks that are immediately accesible but others that seem very strange, and hard to grasp on first listen. I actually think that's a good thing. . . Dre is nothing if not meticulous in how he decides to do things, sonically, and I actually think this will be a grower. . . in some ways it seems really IDM - experimental shifts in tone/genre. . . it also flows together in a way that feels sort of like a soundtrack to a movie. . .almost like the whole thing is a concept album. . .

Not sure I ever listen to Dre's music for the lyrics, but seems like the typical gangsta bravado and misogny with a few truly clever lines interspersed. I mean, album is called COMPTON so not sure expecting more would be reasonable (Dre will never be Aesop, that's cool with me).

BTW, would be interested to see what u think about a relisten to 2001 btw - still one of my favorites. . .

I think it's a good Album, but has not that God-like Status like the predecessors. I'm more flashed by Hitler Wears Hermes 3 these days.

Downloaded a stream rip earlier. Abysmal quality, but it's all I could get my hands on at the time.

Anyway... not a bad album. There are some really great tracks here, but also some pretty awful ones. I was kinda hoping for some old school g-funk style production. Would have preferred that over the trap beats everything has nowadays.

all proceeds from the album are going to fund the arts center in compton - harkening the classic line "never use your own money when you can use someone else's"

Eh? That's pretty awesome. . . can't imagine how much $ this album is going to make. . . Compton, the new Paris?

Genocide is great. Not really into the others.

Out of context quote of the yeartm :-)

There are parts I think are awesome and parts that sound like a pizza with literally everything on it. I give Dre first impression credit for not delivering a cookie cutter mainstream album and showing some high flying musical ambition.

i'm enjoying the heck out of this album!!
