I've also thought the main problem with this guy is that he is just not that talented - but really really wishes he was. He spends his time sucking up to social media because he is the product of the Internet Age - where a distinct lack of ability means you have to find ever more ludicrous ways of staying in the limelight - his rants and tantrums are just a necessary thing nowadays for those whose talent alone cannot carry them.

The name dropping of people like Steve Jobs, Walt Disney etc is just embarrassing. But the controversy is necessary for him. He wants to be remembered like these people but doesn't have the chops.

^ that's the way I've always taken him as well.

I don't think you realize how much of a genius his fans think he is. He really believes he's some kind of superhuman bacause that's what he's been told constantly.

That shit has been going on for years, I don't know what it is but people praise him like crazy.

That probably made him if not at least contributed to the fact he thinks he's some kind of Steve Jobs or something, probably even bigger.

I still stand by his early beats. Solid boom-bap IMO.

He seems so unstable as the years go on. He craves the fame but at the same time it eats him bit by bit. He's going to go out like the guy in Neo Tokyo, crash and burn after trying to beat the other guy who, on the flipside is actually him because of split-personality disorder.

personally, it seems obvious all this is marketing strategy. pretty brillant because honestly, it works.

I think there's an Abilene paradox with a lot of overwrought praise for many musicians and bands these days, not just Kanye in particular, he's an unique case imo, but with a lot of "indie" artists as well. Tame Impala is a great example, IIRC even the singer of that group himself said they were overrated. Or anything hyped by pfork in retrospect (Neutral Milk Hotel).

Not to mention there's this whole meme-heavy and meta aspect to fandom of music these days, discussion of albums on twitter or facebook or in op-eds is never straightforward or simple or earnest. People talk about people talking about music. It explains why Kanye is so famous - people like to get fame and notability discussing him and others. It explains historically baffling long articles on wikipedia like this being accepted as potentially future music history canon. Especially with pop and mainstream hip-hop. There's no off-year mediocre miss of an album for artists anymore. Music is either discussed in a short time-frame, end of year lists, or retrospectives years later. Kanye simply can't be said to have put out a crap album or discussed as overrated because there's a huge massive assignment of contemporary culture importance assigned to him. It's a chicken-egg thing that's impossible to start over with. What's the point in trying to discredit and demote an artist when objective criticism itself has been thrown out the window.

Tame Impala is excellent though... but even the praise excellent music gets lately seems to be embarrassingly over the top.  No artist can ever live up to the hype.

Don't have anything of importance to add, but this nails it, imo.

They are good and have no real qualms with them but they were the first such group i could think of. I suppose death grips could be another example.

Personally I think Daft Punk RAM is a prime example. Should have said that first.
