That's........ odd..?

lol actually it's not really. I originally read that as "I only eat avocado on toast for breakfast". THAT would be odd. Imagine the bowel movements.

Lol, sorry I was being jokingly pretentious.

I don't really 'get' streaming, but I reckon most of us already had massive collections of music before streaming was a thing. Doesn't make any sense to ditch it all now for streaming services, that's just loads of money and time down the drain. Probably different for da kidz just starting out on their musical journeyz though, definitely the cheaper option when looking at it from a pure financial perspective.

Bandcamp is defo cool, love it. Kinda combines it all really

I think if you're an average sixteen year old kid right now. You've probably never even heard of vinyl or cd so streaming is just the norm. I have two nieces a bit younger than that and they have phones and tablets etc. They've no idea what a compact disc is, let alone vinyl.

That's the problem though.

Normalizing paying for product you already own by forcing you to use data to access it? That's exactly why apple discontinued their high capacity ipods, at least that's my gut feeling.

That's not really the way it works though. You can just download as many tracks as you want (depending on the storage limits of your device) and listen to them without using any data at all. To me that's no different from syncing my iPod back in the day. I Just keep loads of stuffed stored offline and almost never stream over the air.

edit: about the iPods - I just think Apple was betting against the average consumer wanting to carry two or three devices everywhere, especially now that phones are so big.

I thought most of the apps out there were streaming apps, rather than downloading?

Even if it is downloading, when you're someone (like most of us) with hundreds of gb of music, downloading and changing your tunes constantly when they are lowering capacity of devices will undeniably use more data and is certainly not MORE flexible than suggested, compared to simply always having all your music at your fingertips on a high capacity device.

Then again, I'm new to all these services etc and don't fully understand how they work. get off my lawn etc etc. lol

All the streaming services let you download songs locally to your device. Streaming alone would be pretty much worthless in rural areas or any city where most people ride the subway/metro.

I guess I have somewhat weird use case amongst WATMMers, because I like to limit the number of tracks I have on my device, otherwise I'll never give newer stuff a chance. I can see where you're coming from if you want to have your whole collection on the go.

It's funny you mention that because I've actually considered doing what you do for a while, to make sure I fully listen to tracks and appreciate them etc. Sometimes with digital media I have a tendency to skip over/through things that aren't striking my mood immediately. It's part of why I started buying vinyl (I never skip a track on vinyl, I commit to listening through albums etc).

The biggest problem with the storage side of things is that Apple (to take one example) are purposely crippling the storage capacity because they don't want you storing your entire music collection anymore. They want everyone streaming from Apple Music. They're losing money on downloads for the last five years - that business is dead and buried for them.

If I wanted to be able to hold all the lossless music I own and have the entire thing on an iPod, It would have to be over 500GB in capacity. I bet there are peeps on here with much larger collections than that.

When I go out walking in the woods, I don't want some flaky 128kbps file streaming poorly because of bad reception. All this streaming shit is for tech types and people living in cities with 100GB wifi connections.

The thing I really hate about streaming is the business model itself coupled with the fact that you are paying to listen to stuff you don't own AND you're paying your network provider on top of that. The whole thing is just a joke.

My thoughts exactly, you articulated it much better than me Fumi.

This is a bit gross, but whenever I see the word 'streaming' I imagine a rich startup CEO pissing out the window of his 2016 model lease-car onto a poor busking musician.

The industry as a whole is pushing streaming not just apple.

Anyways, other DAPs I researched were either prohibitively expensive or when I read reviews seemed to have lots of problems.

Do you have one you would recommend, high capacity (higher than 240gb)?

Not with that high capacity. I use a Cowon iAudio i9, 16gb, I guess there is a 32gb version. Plays most formats, (incl. flacs) out of the box and has good sound and nice form and wasn't too expensive if I remember.. Is it there really a reason to be carrying most of your collection about your person at all times? I guess living in Canada and moving from one place to another takes hours, a big playlist might be handy.

Truth be told, maybe my reasoning for the capacity isn't good enough. I don't know why I like to have all that music at my fingertips?

I might listen to albums more thoroughly if I had fewer of them on my device. It's something I've been considering doing.

I'm torn. haha

I had a 30 or 60gb player and it was frankly pointless as I barely listened to most of the stuff that I had on there and concentrated on just a few albums. My thinking to have it stuffed was that I might be in the mood for listen to this album at some point, so better put on there. Already with the 16gb I find that a large part of the stuff there doesn't get listened to. Although, I usually just have shuffle on if I am not currently listening to a new album, so having a large pool of tracks might be useful, but you can still fit quite a few tracks on 16gb, even when they are larger lossless files.

200GB micro sd cards are pretty cheap now, £50 last week on amazon UK for a sandisk one. Loads of non apple phones and devices take em. I've got a 128gb one in my phone with fukloads of flacs on. Add in a chromecast audio for £15 to stream flacs to amp. Jobdun. Edited by Amen Warrior

streaming is the future, deal with it or die.

i don't know what's happening in the goy world but in the holy land 10gb of mobile internets costs 10$ dollars per month.

10 gb lets you stream about 4 hours of music every day (in a properly encoded~192 kbps mp3. if you think you will hear difference between that and flac, the don't, you wont).

i personally stream all of my music from home pc and don't use any of those streaming services.

Fucking Christ (literally), data costs like 10x that in the States.

it's similarly expensive here, tho there's partnership things like "get this 2 year mobile contract & spotify streams don't count against the data quota" to funnel you into subscribing.

personally not liking these services at all.. may work for 90% of the music you want, but succ when certain albums are unavailable etc..
