i just think the stripping down peaked with "nothing" really. that new track doesn't strike me as considerably more minimalistic than their recent output, wouldn't feel out of place on any of the last few albums imo.

Yeah, that whole deconstruction thing was very apparent through Chaosphere and Nothing. After that they've gone a bit in both this direction and that direction, but with a LOT of mid tempo retard industrial grind grooves. Cool as hell, but a bit overdone.

Highlights for me since 2000 are a couple of the RUBBER BAND riffs on I, some of the SPIDER LEG riffs on Catch 33, the thrash metal extravaganza of Combustion and the LARS ULRICH GO KILL YOURSELF mindfuck riffs/kick drums on Bleed, as well as the more dadaistic approach on Koloss.

A lot of their newer material makes a lot more sense live, btw.

I am usually not very quick in diving into their new records. I takes me a lot of time (Koloss took me several years of slow tasting even though I have thoroughly heard most of their stuff before that) before I start really dig it. There is a lot of small details and moments even in their minimalistic tracks that can hold my interest but it takes time to appreciate them. Koloss has some incredibly sensitive drumming moments in the context of the genre. Haake really understands the dynamics of the music.

Haake is the most untouchable drummer in the history of metal, along with Sean Reinhardt.

I love his creativity and effectiveness. I always loved drummers who understood composition. Not surprise he was strongly influenced by Neil Peart. Similar approach.

Preordered!

Also the least dodgy Meshuggah album artwork since...forever?

they remade the album artwork of all their releases for the vinyl boxset and some of the new covers are even worse

:psyduck:

I tried to wipe up a quick post comparing new and old covers but it's turned out to be a whole mess since you can't resize posted images on this forum and linking images from discogs is a damn hassle. open spoiler at ur own riskkk

The new Chaosphere cover isn't too bad (that font doh...) but the rest, especially Nothing are God awful. More like Destroy Erase Make Worse amirite

Their covers have never really been very good imo. So much use of shitty emboss effects.

The only one I actually kinda like is the original obZen artwork.. just looks more elegant than their other covers.

lol, that's like saying you'd like autechre more without all those god damn synth sounds everywhere

A little less rehash going on in this song than in the first preview. Digging the way the track takes a cool departure after a couple of verses!

This fucking song is absolutely fucking incredible. I mean what the fuck did I just listen to? What the fuck the drummer was doing?? Those fucking riffs...

That's some balls to the wall there. Sick groove at the 3min mark.

needs more ride cymbal though...

so i know next to nothing about this band or genre but can someone recommend "minimalist" metal kind of like this? maybe with less emphasis on vocals. i really like what i'm hearing but i'm having a lot of difficulty moving beyond the vocals.

Two classics:

Sleep - Dopesmoker

Confessor - Condemned
