Deepex
What an absolutely amazing time! Best weekend of my life. Aphex Twin was everything I had hoped for and more. I can't believe that I got a copy of the record too! It was great to meet those of you that I did. The Defunkt after parties really were a nice addition to the festival as well. I'm still processing everything that I just took in. Watching the recording over and over. The recording is taken from almost my exact vantage point. At one point he pans over and I can see my friends and I getting down. I can also definitely hear myself wooing at times through out! haha Sorry for archival purposes, but we were so damn excited. I'm calling off work again today. I'm not yet ready for real life haha. Basically the strings are what remain, percussion is different, and the synth line seems to be a acid-y 303 or something instead of the original SH101 line. When I heard it in person I thought he teased it at first then had it playing synced with another track, but as it went on I realized it was an acid-y rework of the song. datastream
We waiting in the Bjork line on Friday for hours only to get turned away, but we made new friends who happened to be press from LA and were gifted VIP passes. Sweetness. For Aphex I was up in the VIP section, which I helped some other friends rush when someone in a wheelchair came through. I loved the opening of the set and its imagery. I feel like it thinned out the trainspotters a bit and then things got more and more intense until that fucking rain came. I believe at that point i stood upon the barrier and screamed "come on" at the top of my lungs beckoning the weather to go harder. That shit was pure magic, I wouldn't of wanted it any other way. Everyone around me was losing their shit. At the end of the set the sound people were losing their shit. The security guards were losing their shit. Amazing time. Adieu
Yeah, I was listening to the set again yesterday (the hd youtube recording), and I got a bit choked up remembering how completely in the moment I was during his set, and how I was having the most amazing time listening to his brilliant selection of tunes. Listening again to the acid bass line just as the rain had begun coming down (it started a bit earlier in the track that kept saying "acid"), and remembering that exact moment the acid line came on and everyone went fucking wild with excitement. It was so dirty and intense. People behind me were literally jumping as high up in the air as they could. I got lucky that I was able to squeeze up as far as I did to see Aphex. I think I was about 6 people back from the front. It was a challenge pushing through people and even getting yelled at for it, but thankfully there were some folks nice enough to let my friends and I have some space up front to enjoy such an epic set. The entire festival had a wonderful and friendly atmosphere augmented beautifully by intense lighting and art installations. It's not often that you find yourself in spaces that feel very welcoming and safe especially when you're taking drugs, but the organizers really understood what they needed to do to create that sort of vibe. They even had rooms with trippy light shows that were designed to lay down in. The art installations themselves were extremely well done, and would have been worthy of a trip to museum or something to check out. Last time I saw Aphex, at Bangface Weekender in 2012, was a similarly inspiring experience. Not only did I get to have the fucking time of my life with my close friends and family, but I got to experience a proper rave for the first time. I got to see the best of what Rephlex has to offer at the Rephlex showcase, and pop my Aphex live experience cherry. This experience reminded me of what is really meaningful and important in life, and that I need to work on prioritizing enjoying myself more. After BW 2012 I was seriously glued to my laptop working on tracks for months, and I think this will inspire the same sort of drive and desire again. If I had any advice to give to anyone after this, I would say, make time to enjoy yourself more often, and set your life up in a way that you can do the things that make you happy as often as possible. So much of everything else just feels like noise right now. I hope I can hold onto this feeling as long as possible. This experience was so much more enjoyable being able to meet as many of you as I did, and being part of a larger group made it that much more fun. I wish I could have met and spent time with more of you. Let's not let too much time pass before we do something like this again. joshuatxuk
^ Well said. There was something very joyful and cathartic about that performance, even with all the stress of daily life going on I feel oddly refreshed emotionally. I remember you moving up in the crowd, it's actually how we met at the fest. I had just been sardined from some other folks moving in and I think I told you "go for it if you can find space" and a couple minutes later you scooched in after you asked if I was a watmmer. We moved back when the wind gushed. Not too far, maybe 20 feet or so. We ended up moving back up as the lesser fans moved out when the freezing rain soaked in. We need to hang out sometime in 2017, maybe at one of the DAMN shows ATOP is putting on. I'm going to one he's doing under his new Aural Canyon label next month. Matthewdavid is headlining. I had made most of them until I moved a bit further away and got swamped with a new job. Also missed one of them, because I blew out my knee in September. Let's hook-up. I gotta get with Cody and talk to him about seeing if I can help with getting DAMN notched up. I had a long conversation with Cygnus about the scene in Dallas earlier this year too, and I think everyone would like to see it go to the next level. Parsifal
What a fantastic set, big thanks to all the people who recorded it for us people who weren't on the continent! One of the best things about his live shows is that it is for me a great source for finding new music. For example, Rolando Simmons is a name I've seen around but never bothered/had time to check out, and thanks to him playing "You're Life You'r Tsois" I just now bought his whole discography on bandcamp. Now to find the time to listen to it all :) Also it's fun to read about peoples experiences of the show. Spread the love! Bus
To echo the stories that have already been shared on here, this was an amazing night. I drove about 14 hours to meet up with my best friend who lives in Austin and then we drove the remaining 2-3 hours out to the show. We got to see him at Coachella in 2008 and this show was a perfect continuation to our Aphex experiences. I didn't think I'd ever get the chance to see him again, but I'm so greatful I did and super glad I didn't think twice about whether or not to go to this. The way the whole evening played out and all the circumstances envolved made it a night I'll never forget - one of the best, if not the best, nights of my life. We were beside the sound booth right behind a handicap viewing area so we had a great unobstructed view of most everything. The wind, the temperature drop, then the rain and the light show all were an awesome chaotic mix to give the show an extremely unique feel. A little after the halfway point in the set there was so much free space around us we could dance properly and did so for the rest of it. I haven't had that much fun or danced that hard in years. About 30 minutes before the end someone with a Cheetah shirt (a light blue one, not the navy one they were selling at the show) came over and joined our little dance party. It was cool to have that little bit of community feel and share the moment with someone we didn't know who was just as excited and into it as us. Super thanks to whoever recorded the full set audio! I don't know if it was someone on here or not, but so much thanks if they happen to read this. They were right beside me and I had no idea they were recording. Some of the non-music sounds are the exact perspective I had and you can hear my friend and I laughing and talking after the show before the recording cuts off. I've been a lurker on here for years (probably close to a decade now - thanks for all the info and entertaining dialogue, BTW) and I figured now, having experienced this same amazing event as many of you, would be a good time to chime in and contribute to keeping the great feeling of this night alive as long as possible. Haha, holy shit! 'sup dude. I was the guy in the light-blue Cheetah shirt who joined your rave on the hilltop. My friends and I flew out from Los Angeles Saturday morning. After multiple delays we finally made it to our airbnb around 5pm. We missed out on a few shows I would've liked to see in the early afternoon but Richard's set was so monumental I would've been happy going home that night. Nothing on Sunday even came close. After being hot and humid all day, 45 minutes into Richard's set a wind kicked up. It dropped 40 degrees, and the rain started POURING as if he had a MIDI controller jacked into the weather. Everyone went insane. That Edge of Motion acid track followed by HVAD and Current Value, with lasers sweeping through thick sheets of rain and that low growling bass. It was the most amazing shit I have ever seen. I was with my girl down in the center until she headed back inside to get warm. I started hiking up the hill to find my friends who had come over from RtJ and were tripping balls somewhere, then the Rome track came on. When I came over the top and saw these two guys in black Aphex Twin t-shirts going NUTS just dancing like fucking crazy, I had to join ya'll. That last half-hour was downright abusive. 40 degrees, everyone soaked, with the whole audience going ballistic to this heavy-hitting hardcore DnB and gabber...it will never be topped. The whole night was an unforgettable ecstatic experience. I don't think I'm ever going to calm down.
