101% IDM is buying shitty uncomfortable headphones to make your ears suffer after an hour of maximum volume elseq banging (not speaking of your internal ear which is delighted but rather of the external ear, the one that aches and burns after a too long listening session). At least that's what I'm telling myself when I ask in the silence of the night why I bought once again cheap headphones that won't make it to the end of the year.

But wearing them after the album is over, and thus accepting enduring the pain it provides to your ear pavilion is the most IDM thing you can do.

Interesting. I do believe a certain level of difficulty and struggle is required in life, but I don't believe damage is required. Like Carl Crack died, but I dunno if ATR was worth it. I suppose health is the ultimate sacrifice.
