Apparently inspired by the puffins on Skellig that Rian Johnson saw when scouting locations. I think they're making more of a big deal about them than what they actually will be, although there will be a "Chewbacca and the Porgs" children's book:

there were some ridiculous aliens / creatures in the Lucas films along with the many weird and wonderful ones. not just talking about the Ewoks or the awkward 6-breasted lady from RTOJ, there were plenty of other oddballs like this, so let's not kid ourselves too much.

The last season of Rebels, which is Disney canon, showed Obi Wan's brief rematch and victory against Darth Maul on Tattooine, so it will be something better than that.
