You're right to feel bothered by the excitement around 're-shoring'. There's a curve upward in manufacturing jobs growth at the moment but there will probably be a point soon where automated labor in manufacturing succeeds over most human labor. And in my view, people are daft if they think this is bringing us any closer to some kind of Jetsons Family fully-automated luxury communism.

 

Integrated with smart cities, 5G and the IoT we're all being promised in glowing terms. Plus with the citizenship of the robot Sophia ("Wisdom" goddess in Gnosticism and Kabbalism) in Saudi Arabia of all places, we can expect the way opening for machines to have equal rights to humans, including marriage rights (check the endless reports on Sex bots), and humanity faces their demise or a merging with them in the "singularity." Next door to Arabia we have Jerusalem which is already being called by some the hi-tech capital of the world and are well known leaders in cyber-security.

Re robot rights: We know that granting one citizenship brings rights with it yes? Now did you know that the Hanson robot "Sophia" recently received citizenship status in Saudi Arabia? There was much public outcry of such a perceived effrontery to the actual female citizens of Saudi Arabia who are treated as second class citizens, indeed they only just received rights to drive cars -- a big deal for them.

This greases the skids already for more progressive, liberal, socialist, whatever nations to follow suit who pride themselves on things like animal rights, transgender rights, etc etc leading to rights for transhumans eventually, which has been discussed and pursued now for many years by Google and various government initiatives (look up the Converging Technologies report published in 2002 by the U.S. National Science Foundation and Department of Commerce discussing this). I hope this sounds crazy to you because it is, but very powerful folks are moving forward with these plans with or without your consent, laughing or crying. I'm just relaying the info.

Bear in mind some of these articles are themselves introducing this subject with a 'yeah it's pretty creepy at first but ya know it ain't so bad, besides look at all the perks, so maybe this is a good thing, etc etc" angle, others are straight up PR roll outs, Deity-replacements or simply playing to lower base lusts -- they work every angle. So some here may actually go from denial to advocate; seeing this as a dehumanizing and depopulating agenda is too uncomfortable for some (I'll spare you the endless literature on the depopulation agenda).
