Scientists on an experiment at the Large Hadron Collider see massive W particles emerging from collisions with electromagnetic fields. How can this happen?

The Large Hadron Collider plays with Albert Einstein’s famous equation, E = mc², to transform matter into energy and then back into different forms of matter. But on rare occasions, it can skip the first step and collide pure energy—in the form of electromagnetic waves.

Last year, the ATLAS experiment at the LHC observed two photons, particles of light, ricocheting off one another and producing two new photons. This year, they’ve taken that research a step further and discovered photons merging and transforming into something even more interesting: W bosons, particles that carry the weak force, which governs nuclear decay.

This research doesn’t just illustrate the central concept governing processes inside the LHC: that energy and matter are two sides of the same coin. It also confirms that at high enough energies, forces that seem separate in our everyday lives—electromagnetism and the weak force—are united.

From massless to massive

If you try to replicate this photon-colliding experiment at home by crossing the beams of two laser pointers, you won’t be able to create new, massive particles. Instead, you’ll see the two beams combine to form an even brighter beam of light.

“If you go back and look at Maxwell’s equations for classical electromagnetism, you’ll see that two colliding waves sum up to a bigger wave,” says Simone Pagan Griso, a researcher at the US Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. “We only see these two phenomena recently observed by ATLAS when we put together Maxwell’s equations with special relativity and quantum mechanics in the so-called theory of quantum electrodynamics.”

Inside CERN’s accelerator complex, protons are accelerated close to the speed of light. Their normally rounded forms squish along the direction of motion as special relativity supersedes the classical laws of motion for processes taking place at the LHC. The two incoming protons see each other as compressed pancakes accompanied by an equally squeezed electromagnetic field (protons are charged, and all charged particles have an electromagnetic field). The energy of the LHC combined with the length contraction boosts the strength of the protons’ electromagnetic fields by a factor of 7500.

When two protons graze each other, their squished electromagnetic fields intersect. These fields skip the classical “amplify” etiquette that applies at low energies and instead follow the rules outlined by quantum electrodynamics. Through these new laws, the two fields can merge and become the “E” in E=mc².

“If you read the equation E=mc² from right to left, you’ll see that a small amount of mass produces a huge amount of energy because of the c² constant, which is the speed of light squared,” says Alessandro Tricoli, a researcher at Brookhaven National Laboratory—the US headquarters for the ATLAS experiment, which receives funding from DOE’s Office of Science. “But if you look at the formula the other way around, you’ll see that you need to start with a huge amount of energy to produce even a tiny amount of mass.”

The LHC is one of the few places on Earth that can produce and collide energetic photons, and it’s the only place where scientists have seen two energetic photons merging and transforming into massive W bosons.

A unification of forces

The generation of W bosons from high-energy photons exemplifies the discovery that won Sheldon Glashow, Abdus Salam and Steven Weinberg the 1979 Nobel Prize in physics: At high energies, electromagnetism and the weak force are one in the same.

Electricity and magnetism often feel like separate forces. One normally does not worry about getting shocked while handling a refrigerator magnet. And light bulbs, even while lit up with electricity, don’t stick to the refrigerator door. So why do electrical stations sport signs warning about their high magnetic fields?

“A magnet is one manifestation of electromagnetism, and electricity is another,” Tricoli says. “But it’s all electromagnetic waves, and we see this unification in our everyday technologies, such as cell phones that communicate through electromagnetic waves.”

At extremely high energies, electromagnetism combines with yet another fundamental force: the weak force. The weak force governs nuclear reactions, including the fusion of hydrogen into helium that powers the sun and the decay of radioactive atoms.

Just as photons carry the electromagnetic force, the W and Z bosons carry the weak force. The reason photons can collide and produce W bosons in the LHC is that at the highest energies, those forces combine to make the electroweak force.

“Both photons and W bosons are force carriers, and they both carry the electroweak force,” Griso says. “This phenomenon is really happening because nature is quantum mechanical.”

In early August, co-director Lilly Wachowski confirmed the theory was correct all along.

"The corporate world wasn't ready for it," Wachowski said in a YouTube video for Netflix Film Club. "'The Matrix' stuff was all about a desire for transformation but it was all coming from a closeted point of view." 

"The Matrix" series was born out of the imagination of two trans women, Lana and Lilly Wachowski. When the films were released, neither sister had publicly come out as trans.

"I don't know how present my transness was in the background of my brain when we were writing it but it all came from the same kind of fire," Lilly Wachowski said in the video. "Trans people exist — especially me and Lana — in this space where the words didn't exist, so we were always living in a world of imagination." 

'The Matrix' is about breaking free of a simulated false 'reality,' like trans people break free of their gender assigned at birth

In "The Matrix," all of humanity is trapped in a simulated world created by machines." The film's protagonist, Neo, is recruited to the rebellion against the simulation. 

Fans have long said the very concept of breaking free of the false reality of "The Matrix" is an allegory for transgender people realizing their real gender identity versus the one they were assigned at birth. 

According to fan theories, Neo sheds his identity that the Matrix assigned him by creating a new one in the real world, similarly to how transgender people often stop going by their deadname (the name assigned to them at birth) and find a new name for themselves. 

Switch was intended to be a transmasculine character 

A character named Switch would have been the most pointed allusion to transness in the Matrix, according to Wachowski.

Originally, the Wachowskis wanted Switch to present as a man in the real world and a woman in the matrix, acting as a metaphor for transmasculine people.  

While Switch is played as a woman in the film in both worlds, they are still presented androgynously as a nod to the original concept. 

The red pill may represent estrogen, a type of HRT used to treat gender dysphoria 

Neo is presented with two options by a mysterious figure named Morpheus in the beginning of the first film in the series "The Matrix," the red pill which will reveal the truth of the matrix and the blue pill which will allow Neo to forget his interactions with Morpheus and continue on in the false reality. 

 

Writer Andrea Long Chu theorized in her book "Females: A Concern" that the red pill is reflective of the color of estrogen pills, a common hormone replacement therapy (HRT) treatment given to transgender women and transfeminine people to treat gender dysphoria. 

The term "red pill" has also been used in the past by men's rights activists to mean an "awakening" from feminism, which is framed as a "false reality" oppressing men.

Las personas que asistieron a los estudios Sony de New York, el 18 de Noviembre de 1993, dicen que Kurt Cobain estaba tan nervioso al realizar el Unplugged, que trasmitía una onda nunca antes vista en vivo. En la sala era posible escuchar desde el más suave rasgueo hasta el más leve suspiro. La intimidad que se vivía esa noche de otoño, expresaba que se estaba siendo parte de un momento que quedaría registrado para siempre en la historia de la música. Ser espectadores de esa velada fue para muchos fans como tocar el cielo con las manos. O más bien, alcanzar realmente el verdadero estado nirvana.

Según MTV, Kurt pidió para adornar el escenario una gran cantidad de azucenas y velas blancas. Quería que el set se viera similar a un funeral. Parecía que quería despedirse. O simplemente quería renacer . En una versión más relajada. Alejada del guitarrazo furioso que lo caracterizaba y de la voz rasposa que se hacía mierda en cada nota. Para eso supervisó cada detalle, desde la posición de las sillas, hasta la cantidad de candelabros. Su deseo era que aquella noche fuera un verdadero regalo para los presentes. Quería que todos lo pasaran la zorra, como si todos fueran amigos. Cercanos. Familiares.

Para darle un verdadero toque acústico y diferente a los temas, el trío de Seattle se reforzó con la ayuda de los hermanos Kirkwood (de Meat Puppets) en las cuerdas y de Lori Goldston, en el Violonchelo. El futuro miembro de Foo Fighters, Pat Smear, también los acompañó en las guitarras, como venía haciéndolo hace un tiempo en las presentaciones en vivo.

A Cobain le asustaba la idea de que los fans de Nirvana no se divirtieran en el unplugged por estar acostumbrados a una propuesta mucho más rabiosa y ruidosa. Sucede que tras la acelerada gira de “In Utero”, la banda ganó potencia e intensidad gracias al acompañamiento de Smear como segunda guitarra. Pero para beneficio de Nirvana, la tranquilidad y cercanía con el público que generaba la pequeña sala de los estudios Sony, permitió que Kurt pudiera interactuar con los fans, generando un ambiente de fraternidad. En algunas ocasiones Nirvana tiraba la talla con la audiencia y en otras esta pedía sugerencias para los temazos que querían escuchar. Todo era la pura buena onda. Y eso se agradecía.

Y bueno, el registro de todo lo que no se vio en la presentación emitida hace catorce años por la cadena MTV, es ahora posible de disfrutar tras la aparición a la venta en formato DVD del unplugged en versión Uncut. El aporte de esta edición es que trae por primera vez el show íntegro (sin cortes ni ediciones), permitiendo que los fans vean finalmente las presentaciones de «Something in the Way» y «Oh Me«, omitidas por la transmisión original. También se agregaron cinco ensayos completamente en bruto, bajo el título de The Rehearsals de «Come» As You Are», «Polly», «Plateau», «Pennyroyal Tea» y» The Man Who Sold The World”, además de la incorporación del mini-documental, “MTV News: Bare Witness”, que contiene entrevistas y testimonios de los que estuvieron presentes la mítica noche del 18 de noviembre de 1993.
