Influence of English is fading, says EU chief Juncker

  Quote

European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker took a swipe at Britain on Friday, saying he would not give a speech in English because the language was becoming less significant following Brexit.

"Slowly but surely English is losing importance in Europe," Juncker told a conference in Florence before switching into French and drawing applause from his audience of EU officials, local leaders and Italian students.

Oh, bloody hell.

Can someone explain why the party that has gone with hard austerity for years is so popular and Labour is in the gutter?

It probably will when LePen wins and starts Frexit. I sort of want LePen to win, not because I support her bigotry, but it would probably cause even more trouble for the EU and Euro, which ought to be put down as the cancer-ridden dinosaur it is.

Seems like a trend in the world among left parties. Stuck with infighting and incoherent messaging. Or the Overton window has shifted so much to the right that left-leaning parties have moved toward the right which has caused all the disorganization.

plus the uber toxic legacy of Tony B.Liar & Broon

there are many threads to quite a complex tourniquet currently garroting Corbyn & Labour seem in complete denial about any of them

one thing that irks is the privately educated sons of privilege currently in Corbyn's inner circle, how they can argue against austerity or anything else while these parasites breed and increase their influence around the Labour leadership pretty much defines political hypocrisy

def time to go hill walking in the mountains with some NWW on the headphones until solitude breaks through the altitude, though equally depressing reading something similar inspired May while on a holiday here recently

might have to go full hunter gatherer Ray Mears militia styles

You know, I sort of hope the Tories stay on to do the Brexit stuff. Whoever is in charge is only going to fuck up royally, and if the blame of the failure to do Brexit right is to fall on anyone, why not the Tories?

Once they've been left humuliated by the EU and have left England in the shit policy wise, then we can vote for someone else to sort it out.

TBH, the only main difference I've seen so far because of Brexit is that Marmite has become more expensive. My life continues on unabated.

Corbyn or no Corbyn they'd still be in the shit, I suspect. I don't think they really can present a viable alternative in the current economic climate since there's basically a civil war within their voter base. The Labour voter base consists(/ed?) of two quite disparate populations - urban champagne socialists with an internationalist outlook, and working class folks in declining industrial towns with more nationalist views*. They haven't seen eye to eye for a long time, but Brexit finally made it undeniable how incongruous their priorities can be. This was probably still true under NuLab, but a strong economy (plus Blair/Broon throwing public cash around) always plasters over social divisions to some extent. Now the economy is shite, the cracks have reappeared

Honestly wouldn't be surprised if we saw Labour either split in two, or permanently shrink to only encompass one of its two former camps

*staggeringly generalised but im sure most ppl can see some sense in it

May tapping up the promise of mental health structural changes/budget increases (massive opportunism from an austerity & mental health budget slashing backer) and her appearing on the prolapse of a peak-time telly show that is the The One Show, illustrate that democracy isnt in very good shape across these islands currently

i noticed it while visiting family, the tories being almost completely in control of mainstream media really does work. numerous family members just think corbyn is a bumbling idiot and the tories are the strongest option for middle class economics. when i asked wether they thought it was ok that the tories have made huge cuts to disabled peoples benefit funding they had no idea what i was talking about, and immediately dismissed it as ''something i must have read on the internet''. they are going to ruin him in this election, and the most vunerable members of our society are going to suffer brutally for it.

a bumbling idiot of firm conviction, decent policies, and a strong talent for answering on the fly questions (to my knowledge) truthfully and directly?

id be interested to know what actual things is he doing at the moment that makes him seem idiotic to you

he doesn't have any decent policies, his policies are idiotic. they'd bankrupt the country and bugger up the economy even worse than brexit is going to.

Nice little LSE thing here on media representation of Corbyn

The manifesto is out next week I hope....we can pour over it with scorn or praise then...

right, but the tories current trend of increasing child poverty to 1 in 5 children, completely stagnating wages, and tripling the national debt from 700 million to 1.9 billion are all the signs of a great sense of economy? even if the gdp is increasing, the only people recieving it are the billionaires.

child 'poverty' is a bit of a lie though. they don't actually measure real objective poverty with those figures, it's more about relative inequality (which is higher than it should be I'll admit, but it's not the same as actual poverty).

I don't think the Tories have been doing a particularly good job on the economy, obviously brexit will be the biggest fuckup in that regard, that doesn't mean it can't get worse though.
