it’s cool how using certain sounds or motifs that are aspects of a genre is doing an elegy. doing distortion is also elegiac i think and possibly also slow music. if you incorporate elements 10 or more years after they were common you’re either doing an elegy or cultural critique imo

Only thing I can think of that 1) I actually listened to 2) came out this year 3) is worth of AOTY is Narkopop. The Rolando Simmons is pretty good but not in that league - I don't find myself wanting to listen to it except that first track. 

yeah the first track has all the post-elegy "feels" but then somehow the rest of the album meanders too much

Oh, I forgot Meatbingo - The Error of My WAVs. I think this has to be my default AOTY vote because I have been listening to it more than anything else this year. I expect to be in the minority because it's not very IDM and it is unashamed to be cheesy, but it's great driving and working music.
