jokes besides this is an incredible achievement especially when the 2 thrusters land at the same time at 9:31 and also the core part of the rocket managed to land at sea on a platform.

I watched the launch live and felt very proud. Especially how the whole thing landed back on Earth like some sci-fi stuff. Future on its way.

However, i didn't catch... did they bring the car back or left it in orbit?

Man, I watched the launch but did not see the landing. Holy hell that was a sight to see. To quote my friend I think I got a glimpse of the excitement past generations had with the space race of the 60s.

Coolest thing ever and it gives me hope for the future. This is important because it's the first test of the Falcon Heavy which will dramatically cut launch costs for putting big things into orbit like satellites and ISS components. The car was just a cool added touch - they weren't going to launch anything important because this is just a test and they wanted to prove they can launch heavy things as big as the car safely. People are complaining about it with tweets about the US's healthcare and shit but this is a private company, the US's healthcare situation has nothing to do with SpaceX. And this will save money in the future so this is a net gain for everyone in the world, and for SpaceX.

OK, I'll jump on this Zeffgrenade for the teem. Let's say you're the supreme decider, what u sending up to space niBBa? And for what purpose / to what end? And at what expense?  Accounting of course for the finite nature of Earthen resources (not necessarily monetary, but tangible), how those resources could be more humanely allocated elsewhere )and how our current hypercapitalist economic systems provide no incentive for doing so, etc.  Last time I checked you could build a solid gold replica of Neil Armstrong for around the cost it'd take to send himself into space.

Communications satellites, GPS satellites, climate monitoring satellites, ISS components for doing immunology research in zero gravity environments, you know, science shit.  I don't support doing it as some international dick-waving competition of who's the coolest - I support doing it for important reasons that have longterm impact.  How are we going to redirect meteors without a well developed space program?  What about asteroid mining to limit our dependence on raping the Earth for metals?  How are we going to enter the Star Trek socialist utopia without reaping the benefits of being a multi-planetary civilization first?  

And by the way - of course it's going to start out as self indulgent capitalist bullshit like "trips to space for $1m" and "round trips around mars for $100m"

Don't think of that as decadence and a priority of billionaires over the common people - think of that as billionaires donating money to the development of cheap space travel for all of these purposes I mentioned, which are all meant for increasing the efficiency of humanity

The Falcon Heavy is estimated at $90 million per launch, while the SLS Ares V Heavy is over $1 billion per launch. So he's definitely created a market, although Ares is a much larger vehicle.

If this was a commercial he'd launch the most up to date shiny Telsa Model 3 or something with the logo prominently displayed.  Instead he sent his own personal older model from years ago with funny references to Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy inside car, and playing A Space Oddity

There is literally nothing to hate here, this is a test launch and he is decreasing the amount of waste products produced by space launches by making reusable rockets, and he decided to do it in a fun way
