I think my tastes skew a little more to the weirdo rock side of things. Great year for soundtracks!

Johnny Greenwood - You Were Never Really Here

John Carpenter - Halloween

Colin Stetson - Hereditary

Ohgr - Tricks

Beach House - 7

Idles - Joy Is An Act of Resistance

Daughters - You Won't Get What You Want

Sun Kil Moon - This is My Dinner

There's a new Ohgr album!?

Oh that massive hype around DIMD release on Litany.org....ten years ago, damn. Welt is tits though.

LOL Litany, I used to post there ages ago. The userbase put me off a bit though.  I love OhGr. All of the first four albums really. A quick skim of this hasn't blown my mind, but neither did DIMD when I first heard it, ended up proper growing on me though. I like how rough it sounds. Welt is the shit but so is Sunnypsyop. I really like how without the lyrics some of their tracks would really suit a Sonic the Hedgehog game.

DIMD was a grower for me too. It was possibly the last release from industrial/EBM field I got before turning myself into 100% instrumental music. Not a conscious decision, just turned out that way. Went years before I found myself interested in stuff with vocals (old favorites and new finds). Looking back all that Bill Moseley gibberish in the album was so overhyped as was the Repo movie which came around the same time. Both of those things were just turd.

Here's my faves of the year. The setting doesn't really differ from the last year's list, nor the one before that:

Full lengths:

dgoHn - Devlis

EDM/Jodey Kendrick - EDM iii

EDM/Jodey Kendrick - EDM K

Mutant Beat Dance - Mutant Beat Dance

The Mover - Undetected Act From The Gloom Chamber

EP's

Aphex Twin - Collapse

Bewwip - Human Turn Signal Device

dgoHn - So Be It Lumbricina

Honorable Mentions:

Chevron - Good Morning Britain

D'Arcangelo - Somewhere In Time

Rhythm Composer - Warehouse District

Useless Idea - Acid Hologram

Well, according to my discogs log I bought 361 records this year.  Only 13 were of music from 2018 though.

In descending order

Aphex Twin - Collapse EP
Autechre - NTS Sessions
Fret - Silent Neighbour EP
Jon Hassell - Listening To Pictures
Kamasi Washington - Heaven And Earth
2814 - Pillar / New Sun
Mr Fingers - Cerebral Hemispheres
Dopplereffekt - Athanatos
Loidis - A Parade, In The Place I Sit, The Floating World (& All Its Pleasures)
Young Paint - Young Paint
Sarah Davachi - Gave In Rest
The Sea And Cake - Any Day
Flame 1 - Fog / Shrine

..but better than all of those was the new reissue of Haruomi Hosono's 1989 album Omni Sight Seeing, which is a complete revelation.

A couple of kickass albums nobody else here will like:

Tromo - Harmonies of Randomness

Kaos - Students of Athropology

A comathematician is a device for turning cotheorems into ffee.

I've kept up with Autechre since buying Amber in.....I dunno about the year Come To Daddy was released 97/98

But NTS is the point where I got left behind in the dust. I need a couple of more years to get into Elseq properly, then they dropped NTS and I'll admit to me it seemed like scaling the sonic version of K2. I just couldn't do it. I think I lasted 20 minutes before pulling the plug. And I haven't been back or likely to revisit in the near future. What I've heard of the Elseq series blows me away and I can't get into NTS before I wrap my head around that first.

Glad I got that off my chest on this thread than in the IDM version of a witches coven that is the Autechre subforum ; )

I gotta be honest. If you drop like 10 hours of music with like 20-30 minute tracks, it’s hard to be there for it. It’s like a responsibility. I can listen to a track here, a track there, etc but I just like Exai better.

That's the best part of these year-end threads, getting to see people list releases that may have slipped under your personal radar
