The reason isn't the pettiness of EU officials. You can't simply import stuff from third countries just like that, it's the outer border of the largest economic area of the planet and protects 27 countries and the standards of procedure that the EU members agreed to have to apply here. Of course there is a procedure for treating goods from third countries and of course these procedures are applied to all third countries, including the UK. The laws wouldn't make sense if you could just arbitrarily make exceptions, it's not how a state of law works. I'm sure with a sensible Brexit deal lorry drivers could take sandwiches across the border. A lot of time had been spent to make such a deal but the British government didn't accept it. The pettiness really isn't on the EU side here

The pettiness is in making it the next day, so that trucks in the queue will have to bin food. What are they going to do about sandwiches that had been brought over on the 30th and are already in the EU? Send the EU sandwich police after them? It's the exact same product that was able to cross the border freely beforehand. Listen, I agree that the vast majority of the blame falls on the English government in pfaffing about, but EU diplomats are determined to make an example of the UK.

Exceptions in trade deals are made all the time, they do not have to be arbitrary. These include phased-in approaches to tariffs and goods classification.

But there is no deal and that is the problem and my entire point. If you have no agreement you can't make exceptions, exceptions have to be part of a legal document (and then they aren't arbitrary). That the UK has no deal with the EU is only their own fault. They consciously decided to be treated like the Congo or other third countries with no particular unilateral trade deal.

Both sides came to a fair agreement but the UK preferred to have no agreement at all (which has nothing to do with a decision the EU made). I don't see why the UK should keep all privileges of being a member without being a member.

Sandwiches. The hill the UK chooses to die on.

Lol you know you can even make exceptions in cases when no arrangements are in place? Like yes, the English government is a bunch of fucking tits, but this is where you (not you directly ding) play the magnanimous role and say, “ok we’ll let you take your shitty Asda sandwiches” over the border for the next 30 days as before.
The comparison to the Congo (Democratic Republic or Republic? Both?) is not a good one, as the UK is still a member of the EU and the food products in question are exactly the same. It’s not like you’re taking a risk with American “cheese-like product” or something.

Who said anything about “all the privileges of being a member”? And what “hill to die on?” Brexit with a deal is already dead, let the lorry drivers eat their sandwiches lol.  They’re already probably drinking their own piss in Kent...

The UK left in Jan 2020.

Yea but we're still in the transition period to sort everything out, which was completely arbitrarily set at 1 year. 6 working days left to sort out every single aspect of our relationship with the EU, I'm sure it will be fine though and de pfeffel knows what he's doing, despite all the evidence and his track record of being a dim posho cunt with 0 qualities

Will prices of UK’s merchandise go up for us in the EU after the New Years?

I was in a hurry to buy a pair of speakers made in the UK before the end of this year bc of this.

Yes, I believe so.  But don't quote me on it. I've not read the 2000 page draft deal which still needs to pass the house of commons and the house of lords before next Friday.
