One of my favorite bars announced they were shutting down so I went out for one last beer. It was a madhouse and I got way drunker than I wanted to get.

That place is crazy I've heard of it, doors that lead to nowhere and such. Did it feel haunted?

^^ in a way yes. not sure if you know the history: but the woman who built it was accident prone. when her husband died she sought a fortune teller for advice and was told there were evil spirits causing her bad luck and to get rid of them she was to "move far away and build a house and never stop".

the doors (and staircases) that lead to nowhere were to confuse these spirits (which- unfortunately, got stuck in the house. and so it's supposedly still haunted). the house was also never finished; some rooms were barely ever used (there are 150), a large portion destroyed during the 1906 san francisco earthquake and it's basically one huge clusterfuck of an escape room for a ghost.

what made it haunting for me was how you get to know someone just from walking around their house and seeing what they liked, from how they wanted to surround themselves. and then to get this very real perspective that she genuinely felt haunted and needed this sprawling mansion to act as some chamber for holding ghosts- yet at the same time, there's a very idyllic life going on which an entire wing dedicated to plants, an amazing outdoor garden and even a ballroom.
