Actually, what happened much more often in ye olde days was that pious women tried to become nuns but were forced into arranged marriages by their families.  St. Matrona of Constantinople actually ran away from her abusive husband to become a nun and eventually became a renowned abbess who started multiple monastic communities throughout North Africa, the Middle East, and Greece.
