After all is said and done I wonder how much of the pandemic will be able to be blamed on the Trump administrations actions/lack of action.

When Trump originally said that it was a pandemic I was actually fairly relieved and surprised they seemed to be acting accordingly. However now New York has a ridiculous number of cases and is projected to get over 300,000 now, and you just know it didn't have to be this way.

Also wonder what conservatives will blame in place of Trump because you know there will be no criticism there. Probably say it's overblown since it is mostly concentrated in cities, where more liberals live. Also "Chinese Virus".

hong kong took the early virus news very seriously, took drastic action, and kept a lid on it. SK, similarly, acted boldly, early on, and turned the corner after an early influx of cases.

trump really blew it and continues to. testing is STILL lacking, that is one example.

possibly just as harmful: the public confusion resulting from his foggy, troll, bullshitter mentality. way, way too many americans are still parrotting the (wrong) trump platitude that it's like the flu and it will be fine.

it's been horrific watching him ALLOW this to happen.

he should have taken care of test production very early, and to an adequate extent. that is the necessary first step to allow cases to be identified and quarantined, and to do contact tracing, and testing and quarantining such contactees. that is just how you prevent spread and the US wasn't doing it and so it spread at its exponential rate.

he should have orchestrated surveillance testing to reveal where the virus is in the country. that's how SK got a significant outbreak under control without draconian measures like china took.

he should have not been so precious about the stock market, and instead of bullshitting people, told them the relevant safety info about this virus. actually, the market was seen to tank in correlation with a lack of faith in trump's ability to handle this. if he had not cared only about the market, and instead worked to prevent the outbreak, then the market would have actually fared better, because the outbreak would not be as bad. like the bullshitter he is, instead of working, he chose to bs and hope for the best.

and there was a huge delay. americans, broadly, didn't realize this would be a big issue for them until the beginning of march. experts knew this was a global threat at the end of january. trump pissed away more than a month when he could have really kept a lid on cases in the US.

if obama were president, not only would the US covid situation look nothing like this, i'm sure obama would have helped improve the situations elsewhere, too.

and, to answer your question more directly, brisbot, yes, trump will be viscerally blamed. it's crystal clear to the well-informed that he failed to protect the country. the obama team even left him with a "pandemic playbook" that they never used. susan rice called it criminal negligence. bill gates said the US missed the window for containment, which was possible. gates also says that the US is failing to implement real nation-wide distancing, which he says is the best move, now. even fauci said testing was a federal failure, and that the US is still not where it needs to be with testing.

the US now has the most cases and may soon have the most deaths. we're at 2,000 deaths and the death count, as you can see here, is doubling every 2 days.

image.thumb.png.9c1062ed41a5b6593bbec441c6bec2f9.png

and here's deaths by state in the US:

image.thumb.png.7ef03d379c3f88e901ae7df855061565.png

COVID is all over the country and deaths are skyrocketing. but trump doesn't want to use federal powers to coordinate medical supply lines, mandate medical supply manufacture, or provide the clear directions that are needed to address this crisis. at this rate, we'll be at 16,000 dead in a week. then it's another week for 256,000 dead, if the rates don't change.

Imagine the mindfuck situation Fauci is in. He has to do the impossible: be truthful while keeping Trump happy. ...WTF. If he survives this white house, he deserves a nobel peace price as far as I'm concerned.

From the podcast "This week in Virology":

An immunologist doc called in on his break from covid hospital chaos.
- they're learning new modalities of care. Stealing from China, they've figured out to have four patients to a ventilator.

- certain immunological markers are incredibly strong predictors of outcome, specifically leukocyte to lymphocyte radio, the strongest

- initially, the virus causes symptoms. As virus titers go down due to immune response, the immune system eats itself and everything else via cytokine storm mediated by interleukin 1, 6, 11.

- off label our doctor used a monoclonal antibody to reduce interleukin 6 causing a dying patient to improve considerably.

- nasal swabs from the front of the nose is 95% as effective as the invasive back of nasal passage swab

- aeresolized virus is not much of a problem since it's such a heavy mother, outside of scenarios that would cause it unusually, like intubation. Worry about droplet transmission (sneeze, cough) which goes max 12 feet and most, most importantly contact with fomites. The chief benefit of a mask is to prevent self inoculation by touching your face. No mask, use a scarf for the same purpose.

- hydroxychloroquine is worthless, vitamin c is BAD, since the virus attacks heart, lungs, kidney, liver in that order, limit use of nsaids which tax the kidneys.

- Japan is mainly under reporting

no  idea what that actually means. symptoms go away then the immune systems goes bananas and kills the patient? w/o symptoms?

i guess i'll have to check out the podcast and stoke my anxiety today.

US working hard to spread the virus evenly over the entire country. Possibly the typical US socialist mindset behind that policy.

I haven't been following the news for several days. Is there still a full schedule of domestic flights in the US......?

No idea, but I have a friend that took a flight to Brazil yesterday to be with his family through all this. He said there were lots of empty flights.

Looking at that flight map, I'm starting to think the US gov maybe wants to thin out their aging population?  That's easier for me to wrap my head around than the amount of stupidity required to keep that many flights in operation at a time like this.

^ - then who will keep the 'business-as-usual' politicians in power? It seems counter to their agenda, if there is one.

Also, gotta say... I am seeing a lot of facemaskless avatars on this forum and am getting concerned. Y'all need to mask up!

the testing is still not enough in the USA. there just aren't enough. the whole state of oregon is under tested. we go tmore test kits and more labs are testing but it's a sit show of disfunction as it is in most states including california.  it seems uncoordinated and lacks the necessary data collection of the results to rely on for making good policy decisions. they're only testing people who are really sick and people w/some symptoms are told to go home and quarantine then many of those people come back after they're sicker. it's fucking weird way to move forward through this.

this technology is pretty crazy
