Nordstream explosion back in the news today, has a rank public relations smell if you ask me

https://www.theguardian.com/world/article/2024/aug/15/ukrainian-team-blew-up-nord-stream-pipeline-claims-report

  Quote

The Nord Stream gas pipeline was blown up by a small Ukrainian sabotage team in an operation that was initially approved by Volodymyr Zelenskiy and then called off, but which went ahead anyway, according to claims in a report in the Wall Street Journal.

MOSCOW, August 19. /TASS/. Moscow will provide assistance to any foreigners who want to escape the neoliberal ideals being put forward in their countries and move to Russia, where traditional values reign supreme, according to a decree signed by President Vladimir Putin.

Under the document, such foreign nationals will have the right to apply for temporary residence in Russia "outside the quota approved by the Russian government and without providing documents confirming their knowledge of the Russian language, Russian history and basic laws."

I'm sure lots of brown people want to move to Russia, the heartland of tolerance and multiculturalism, so they can be subjected to white people's "traditional values".

can't believe that Zelensky had the audacity to pop a wigga pose whilst US senators do a signature on the weapons of war manufactured here in the US, must be election season. Rude!

Brick by brick, Russia is hoping to use this week’s three-day BRICS summit to challenge the U.S.-led global order and Western efforts to isolate Moscow for its war against Ukraine. On Tuesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin welcomed representatives from 36 countries to the city of Kazan to participate in what the Kremlin has described as one of the “largest-scale foreign-policy events ever” in Russia. BRICS member countries collectively account for 45 percent of the world’s population and 35 percent of the global economy.

would be interesting to be a fly on the wall of the closed door convos taking place at the end of the day, with top-tier vodka and cuban cigar smoke flowing

⬆️ oh boy, I hope nato does not go in there making promises like in 2008 yikes!

'weapons are the way to peace' 😂 🤣 - a tacit admission imo that the main purpose of nato after the fall of the soviet union was to create a new market for US defense manufacturers, new markets in Europe (as the united states military had less need for purchasing expensive, industrial scale military equipment after defeating the soviets)

With the US election looming, no one in america is really talking about ukraine any longer. With the possibility that biden harris admin gets voted out, I hope that they do not do anything drastic to try and save face in the next few months if they lose. I do not think that this was covered broadly in western countries, but the russians revised their country's nuclear weapons doctrine to say that they will use them in a first strike if a non-nuclear country (ie ukraine) performs a large scale air attack with the participation and/or support of a nuclear country (ie all the countries in nato with nukes). Maybe this is just saber-rattling, but it concerning to me nevertheless: https://carnegieendowment.org/russia-eurasia/politika/2024/09/russia-nuclear-doctrine-blackmail?lang=en

  Quote

The specific wording of the new version of the doctrine will only be known once the corresponding decree is published, but Putin listed the main innovations in his short speech. The first proposal is that aggression against Russia by any non-nuclear state, but “with the participation or support” of a nuclear one, should be considered a joint attack. The second defines the conditions for the possible use of nuclear weapons: Moscow will be prepared to use them “upon receipt of reliable information of a massive launch of air and space attack weapons and their crossing of the state border,” including strategic and tactical aircraft, cruise missiles, drones, and hypersonic aircraft.

didn't realize they're using Ai targeting systems on drones in ukraine.. the human piloted drones are subject to signal jammers that cause them to lose contact w/the drone. so, the Ai system takes care of that problem and apparently they're quite accurate and fast.

this week Biden admin approved use of long-range atacms missiles for Ukraine to strike deep within Russian territory: https://apnews.com/article/ukraine-russia-war-biden-what-are-atacms-missiles-8d8621321af8c673bd42a5693c2ad1f4

Will the weapons help to change course of war, the article asks?

  Quote

Ukrainian leaders are being cautious about the announcement — and senior U.S. defense and military leaders have persistently argued that it won’t be a gamechanger. They also have noted that Russia has moved many key assets out of range.

“I don’t believe one capability is going to be decisive and I stand by that comment,” Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has said, noting that the Ukrainians have other means to strike long-range targets.

Analysts have also suggested the effect could be limited.

some western outlets like the Economist have been openly discussing the situation on the ground (article paywalled but this a screenshot of headline):

Ukraine is now struggling to survive, not to win. The ambitions of early 2023—a Ukrainian force that could take back its territory or shock Russia into talks through a well-crafted armoured punch—have

Regarding the use of long range missiles and the fact that Russia has revised its doctrine for the use of nuclear weapons, this is how the reaction to biden's decision was received and discussed in DC, reported by new york times:

Image

here is biden admin national security advisor Jake Sullivan discussing the policy change of the long range missile use:

he says right before the interviewer shifts to middle east that the new use of these weapons do not necessarily correlate to Ukraine winning or retaking territory, but that the real issue is the mobilization of manpower (i.e. Ukraine being able to recruit new soldiers and send them to front lines to fight), but he tellingly does not address what the current manpower situation is (and reporting over the past few months suggests that this situation has deteriorated, that the average age of Ukraine soldiers fighting is like 40 years old approximately).

This is Trump discussing the Ukraine conflict. I do not want to promote Alex Jones, but this video recording that Trump did does not seem to be available any where else (I tried using google, youtube, even rumble to find it and could not locate)

From some of the commentary that I have read, it sounds like it will be very difficult for Trump to actually reach a ceasefire quickly in the Russia/Ukraine conflict. Some people say that the Russians are winning overwhelmingly in gaining control of those five eastern oblasts that border Russia, and that the Russia has proposed that those territories be annexed, become part of Russia, and also that Ukraine pledges to neutrality and not joining NATO. It would be difficult for Trump to gain any concessions on any of these demands, so it is highly doubtful that Trump can 'end the war in 24 hours' as he has suggested (not to mention that he has not openly discussed his plan for doing so, because he most likely has no plan).

Also, this morning it is being reported that the US embassy in Kiev has been closed because there is a potential threat of Russian air strikes on Ukraine's capital city: https://www.npr.org/2024/11/20/nx-s1-5197501/ukraine-russia-embassy-closes

  Quote

KYIV, Ukraine — The U.S. and some other Western embassies in Kyiv said that they would stay closed Wednesday for security reasons, with the American delegation saying it had received a warning of a potentially significant Russian air attack on the Ukrainian capital.

The precautionary step came after Russian officials promised a response to President Joe Biden's decision to let Ukraine strike targets on Russian soil with U.S.-made missiles — a move that angered the Kremlin.

It looks like this was a short-medium range Rubezh ICBM capable of carrying multiple 300kt MIRV warheads. More than enough to level almost any city on earth.

This is a historical moment and the clearest possible demonstration that we're completely fucked unless there is immediate deescalation. Putin's not fucking around here.
